In 1971, while driving through an automatic car wash (the ones with the rotating brushes), George Ballas came up with the idea of inventing a string trimmer.



He called it the Weed Eater, and after some refinements, tried to find willing investors for his device.  All of them refused.



So he decided to just develop and sell the thing himself.  First year sales were over a half million dollars.



By 1977 sales were $80,000,000.



He sold the company in 1978.
