Australian scientists said Tuesday they have successfully developed a lab-grown version of the coronavirus – the first such version outside of China – which is seen as a "significant breakthrough."

Researchers from the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne will share their discovery with the World Health Organization (WHO) in the hope it could improve efforts to treat and diagnose the virus, which has killed 132 people and infected nearly 6,000 in China and abroad.

The Doherty Institute's Virus Identification Laboratory head, Dr. Julian Druce, said having the real virus could be used as "control material" for testing while describing it as a "game-changer," according to the Telegraph.

Scientists have reportedly grown a copy of the virus from an infected patient from a sample sent to them last Friday, the Telegraph said.

The lab-grown recreation is expected to be involved in an early-diagnosis test that could detect the coronavirus in people who have yet to display symptoms, which is important because the virus is currently able to spread without visible symptoms, according to the BBC.

An antibody test will enable us to retrospectively test suspected patients so we can gather a more accurate picture of how widespread the virus is, and consequently, among other things, the true mortality rate," Dr. Mike Catton, who works at the Institute told the outlet. "It will also assist in the assessment of [the] effectiveness of trial vaccines."

FURTHER & maybe extremely important

Apparently S Korea & China tested using 30 with virus and 30 without it

After 6 days, all 30 with virus  had no symptoms

More testing needed - but it is so simple a remedy ... seems China is using it now

It's the age old malaria drug (since ww2) that many of us take before going to areas where malaria is present chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine .. brand name Plaquenil    .. a nickle a pill

Don't see link - but I just heard interview on TV with the co-leader of the project

More on chloroquine & hydroxychloroquine

According to South Korean and China human treatment guidelines, chloroquine is effective in treating COVID-19. Given chloroquine's human safety profile and existence, it can be implemented today in the U.S., Europe and the rest of the world.

Medical doctors may be reluctant to prescribe chloroquine to treat COVID-19 since it is not FDA approved for this use.

The United States of America and other countries should immediately authorize and indemnify medical doctors for prescribing chloroquine to treat COVID-19. We must explore whether chloroquine can safely serve as a preventative measure prior to infection of COVID-19 to stop further spread of this highly contagious virus."

It is one of the oldest, most reliable, long ago fully tested drugs in use today

At least 10 clinical trials are currently looking at the potential use of chloroquine as an option for combating the novel coronavirus.

UK has already moved to outlaw hoarding of it .. so I suspect there is something to this one

It proved effective to cure existing Sars  ... What are we waiting for??

It is used to treat existing - It is not a vaccine

This coronavirus has been blown way out of proportion. Having said that, I hope they get a vaccine out to the public ASAP.

Actually it hasn't been exaggerated . Not at all in fact. If allowed to proliferate at current speed it would hit everyone. You know what curves look like and close to vertical is where we would be going .. everyone would get it.

That said, Bernie's young puppet types who would love to take a light hit and see boomers gone .. would love it and take power

Shutting down the global economy for a flu bug?? I am working from home now as of yesterday. What if I did catch the coronavirus. I'm 35, I don't smoke and I'm in excellent physical health. I miss a week or two of work and then I'm healthy again. People over 65 and those  with certain medical conditions should self isolate. Everybody else will be fine.

I would not be so confident kid. You can have permanent lung damage even if you do recover. At this stage in the game it's a bit too late for flattening the curve with it spiralling out of control in Europe. We got to skip all the regulatory bullshit and get a vaccine out there yesterday.

vacine will be very slow I read .. and thus  useless  .. although making time exemptions could help at some point

However, likely effective "treatment type" meds can be now to greatly reduce symptoms  if they get off their asses and approve usage of drug(s) long ago approved for many other usages .. drugs proven to be quite safe in fact

We are not at the old point of "future" .. we are now at the point of "now"

I hope they get approved very soon.

Vancouver

University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research director Professor David Paterson told news.com.au today they have seen two drugs used to treat other conditions wipe out the virus in test tubes.

He said one of the medications, given to some of the first people to test positive for COVID-19 in Australia, had already resulted in "disappearance of the virus" and complete recovery from the infection.

"Patients would end up with no viable coronavirus in their system at all after the end of therapy."

The drugs are both already registered and available in Australia.

"What we want to do at the moment is a large clinical trial across Australia, looking at 50 hospitals, and what we're going to compare is one drug, versus another drug, versus the combination of the two drugs," Prof Paterson said.

Given their history, researchers have a "long experience of them being very well tolerated" and there are no unexpected side effects.

"We're not on a flat foot, we can sort of move ahead very rapidly with enrolling Australians in this trial," Prof Paterson said.

"It's the question we all have – we know it's coming now, what is the best way to treat it?"

Prof Paterson said positive experiences in the fight against coronavirus have already been recorded overseas, citing China and Singapore. His research team are confident they can start getting the drugs to patients in a very safe way on home soil.

"We want to give Australians the absolute best treatment rather than just someone's guesses or someone's anecdotal experiences from a few people," Prof Paterson told news.com.au.

He said they hope to be enrolling patients by the end of March.

"And that way, if we can test it in this first wave of patients, we do fully expect that there are going to be ongoing infections for months and months ahead, and therefore we'll have the best possible information to treat subsequent patients," Prof Paterson said.

"That's really our aim, to get real world experience in Australia."

He said the trouble with the data coming from China was that it wasn't really gathered "in a very controlled way", given they were the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak at the time.

"Things were just chaotic," Prof Paterson said.

"There were these emergency hospitals being built and the system really being very, very stretched."

One of the two medications is a HIV drug, which has been superseded by "newer generation" HIV drugs, and the other is an anti-malaria drug called chloroquine which is rarely used and "kept on the shelf now" due to resistance to malaria.

He said the researchers want to study them in a "very meaningful way" against the coronavirus to "try and alleviate that anxiety of Australians".

"There have already been patients treated with these in Australia and there's been successful outcomes but it hasn't been done in a controlled or a comparative way," Prof Paterson said.

The drugs would be given orally, as tablets.

Prof Paterson said patients would be asked to participate "as soon as they're admitted" to hospital with the aim of beginning treatment "very early on in their illness".

He said the research was sparked by Chinese patients, who were first given the drug in Australia, showing their doctors information on the internet about the treatment used overseas.

"Our doctors were very, very surprised that a HIV drug could actually work against the novel coronavirus and there was a bit of scepticism," he said.

"That first wave of Chinese patients we had (in Australia), they all did very, very well when they were treated with the HIV drug.

"That's reassuring ... that we're onto something really good here."

That's the one I mentioned in this or the other thread a few days ago

I have the hope that Trump's tomorrow morning announcement will be the authorizing of use of hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine

Another test, this time France showed great promise in treating it .. it's a treatment for those who have the illness, not vaccine

It doesnt matter how much it costs. let's get those drugs out to the world ASAP.

hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine, if tests done prove true, is an oldy ... costs a nickle a pill

Since I mentioned these a few days ago - 2 more small tests have supported initial tests
