OK, so a political party  (and it's "owned" press) chooses to use every opportunity (and "create" some too) to criticize the people in charge of it all  as doing poorly .... rather than work together as a team to defeat a common enemy

Further, these same  critics represent a group that is generally very EU friendly, even thinking it is better governed than their own "poorly governed" country.

So, to get a handle on who is doing well and who is not . . . . . . . . .  let's let the numbers do the talkin

(I grant that Germany is the only one of the big EU ones doing a fine job .. assuming reporting is correctly done)

UPDATE - MAY BE EVEN WORSE IN EU: The AP reports three nations, Italy, France and Spain, are not testing thus not keeping track of coronavirus deaths in nursing homes, leading to an under count in those nation's handling of the virus.

https://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2020-03-31/virus-dead-in-nursing-homes-are-often-its-uncounted-victims">By Associated Press, Wire Service Content March 31, 2020, at 2:04 p.m.

AP - The three countries together make up around a third of the global pandemic's confirmed cases, and the lack of testing leaves hundreds, potentially thousands, of victims of the disease uncounted as health authorities try to trace its path, The Associated Press has found.

With such a much better job done in the US than in their lovable EU, maybe critics should STFU and work with the govt that is doing so well at keeping the death rate lower than most of their pet countries

I rest my case

A note - Canada .. so far, and not hit so hard yet ... has better rate than any of the above

The politicization of this pandemic in the USA is despicable..

It doesn't matter if it's an election year or not.

Idiot tries to harm hospital ship Mercy in LA by ramming with train

Train Operator at Port of Los Angeles Charged with Derailing Locomotive Near U.S. Navy's Hospital Ship Mercy

LOS ANGELES – A train engineer at the Port of Los Angeles was arrested this morning on federal charges for allegedly running a locomotive at full speed off the end of rail tracks near the USNS Mercy.

Eduardo Moreno, 44, of San Pedro, was charged today in a criminal complaint with one count of train wrecking as a result of an incident Tuesday afternoon.

According to the criminal complaint filed in United States District Court, Moreno admitted in two separate interviews with law enforcement authorities that he intentionally derailed and crashed the train near the Mercy.

Moreno ran the train off the end of tracks, and crashed through a series of barriers before coming to rest more than 250 yards from the Mercy. No one was injured in the incident, and the Mercy was not harmed or damaged in any way. The incident did result in the train leaking a substantial amount of fuel oil, which required clean up by fire and other hazardous materials personnel.

The train crash was witnessed by a California Highway Patrol officer, who took Moreno into custody as he fled the scene. The Los Angeles Port Police then took custody of Moreno, conducted an interview and obtained permission to search his residence. The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Port of Los Angeles Police are now leading the investigation.

Seems he was afraid of Govt takeover what with naval ship in LA

A train engineer intentionally drove a locomotive full speed ahead off the end of rail tracks near the USNS Mercy, which was docked at the port after transporting necessary supplies for coronavirus efforts to California hospitals.

Federal prosecutors charged Eduardo Moreno, 44, with train wrecking, after he admitted in two separate police interviews that he intentionally crashed the train because he was suspicious of the Navy hospital ship in the dock.

"Moreno stated that he thought that the U.S.N.S. Mercy was suspicious and did not believe 'the ship is what they say it's for,'" according to the criminal affidavit.

Moreno expressed concerns to authorities that the ship had an alternate purpose than to assist with COVID-19 and was potentially linked to a government takeover and he derailed the train to "wake people up."

"You only get this chance once. The whole world is watching. I had to," Moreno told investigators, according to the complaint. "People don't know what's going on here. Now they will."

A California Highway Patrol officer who witnessed the crash said he saw "the train smash into a concrete barrier at the end of the track, smash into a steel barrier, smash into a chain-link fence, slide through a parking lot, slide across another lot filled with gravel, and smash into a second chain-link fence."

Video footage recorded from the locomotive's cab and reviewed by the Los Angeles Port Police shows the train clearly moving at a high rate of speed before crashing through various barriers and coming into close proximity to three occupied vehicles, according to a press release from the Department of Justice. A second video shows Moreno in the cab holding a lighted flare.

Moreno stated that he acted alone and had not pre-planned the attempted attack.

The US will have unemployment figures like Israel this quarter. Canada will too.

The decline in GDP associated with the lockdowns is also particularly concentrated in labour-intensive industries such as leisure and hospitality. Mark Zandi of Moody's Analytics, a research firm, calculates that more than 30m American jobs are highly vulnerable to closures associated with covid-19. Were they all to disappear, unemployment would probably rise above 20%. Research published by the Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis is even gloomier. It suggests that close to 50m Americans could lose their jobs in the second quarter of this year—enough to push the unemployment rate above 30%.

I heard 6.6 million filed for unemployment last week alone, and 3.3 million the week before that, putting it at almost 10 million currently.

Its far from over too. Those businesses that are still open, like mine, are struggling. There will be more before this is over.

This is gonna be WAY worse than back in 2008. Only 660,000 back then according to the chart in this link.

All of this is reminding me of the Great Depression. I'll be 44 this year, and those of us that are anywhere near 50, hopefully remembers their grandparents ways, cause they went through it. The GD was literally 100 years ago. My Great Grandfather taught me to use 2 squares of TP. He use to collect water that would drain off the roof gutter pipe. Always had peanut butter in the house (which is currently selling out like TP right now). He lived simply, and enjoyed a toke off his pipe in the evening lol.
I've come here to chew bubble gum, and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum.

Ontario forecasting as many as 3,000-15,000 deaths

Physical isolation could save as many as 4,400 lives in Ontario by the end of this month, according to COVID-19 pandemic modelling released by the provincial government Friday.

But even with current strategies to limit spread, between 3,000 and 15,000 Ontario residents could die during the course of the pandemic, provincial health officials say.

The numbers show that even with the best case scenario, Ontario's intensive care capacity will have to be expanded by 900 beds or be overwhelmed.

The current model estimates the province will reach 80,000 cases and 1,600 deaths by the end of April. If the province took more extreme preventions, those numbers would be cut to 12,500 cases and 200 deaths.

"To many people these will be shocking figures ... but effective actions have been put in place, remain in place and further actions are being taken," said Dr. Peter Donnelly, president and CEO of Public Health Ontario.
