Obamacare causing cancelled health insurance for hundreds of thousands of Americans, despite Obama pledge

Alex Nussbaum, Bloomberg News | 29/10/13 | Last Updated: 29/10/13 11:37 PM ET

Hundreds of thousands of Americans are having their health insurance cancelled — contradicting President Barack Obama's repeated pledge that people who like their coverage can keep it.

The notices started to arrive in recent weeks, compounding the political headaches for the White House from the troubled start of its health exchange, the federal website created to give millions of people access to new plans by January 1.

One of Mr. Obama's central selling points for his healthcare plan was that people would not be forced to give up their doctors or their coverage.

"We will keep this promise to the American people. If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor. Period. If you like your healthcare plan, you will be able to keep your healthcare plan. Period," Mr. Obama said in June 2009.

But hundreds of thousands of people are now finding their health insurance cancelled because of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare. The act says that health insurance policies that fail to offer added benefits, such as prescription drug coverage and free preventive care, cannot be sold after this year even if they are cheaper.

With the online site expected to face difficulties through November, Americans may have only weeks to find replacement coverage, and many may end up paying higher premiums.

"I keep playing that over and over in my head: that you can keep your health plan, period," said Terri Flay, a Virginia woman whose policy is being cancelled. "But it isn't 'period.' They put a gun to my head saying that I have to pay more because I need the health-care insurance."

"I had heard the repeated assurances by the president and people who work for him that if you have health insurance, don't worry, you'll be able to keep your health insurance," Ian Hodge, 63, of Lancaster, Penn., said in a telephone interview. "Well, that's clearly not true. I wasn't allowed to keep my health insurance."

Suzanne Somers enters the Obamacare debate

by Lindsey Wiebe on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 12:47pm - 10 Comments

Former Three's Company star, ThighMaster maven and self-help writer Suzanne Somers has waded into the U.S. health care debate, penning a critical Wall Street Journal op-ed that's prompted its own criticism for some famous misquotes and inaccuracies.

"Medical care will be degraded, the costs will skyrocket, and most frightening of all, your most intimate and personal information is now up for grabs," writes Somers, in a piece that bears the title 'The Affordable Care Act Is a Socialist Ponzi Scheme'

No not quite. I would say Buchannan was worse. He let the union just fall apart and we all know where that ended up.

Compared with more recent history, Obongo runs about neck and neck with Hoover. Although they come from opposing political parties both were and are inept, disconnected, clueless, elitists.

QuoteCritics of the law have done their level best to create the impression that everyone who's received a cancellation notice has experienced, or will soon experience, rate shock. But it's not true.

Some people who receive these notices will be pleasantly surprised to find that the most similar new plan offered by their current provider is actually cheaper than their old one. Others will be told that a similar plan will cost more. What they won't be told, because insurers don't want to downsell or advertise for their competitors, is that they're likely to find a different plan available through their state exchange that's closer to the same price or cheaper. If they can't find a cheaper one, then there's a decent chance that federal subsidies will reduce their out-of-pocket costs. It's only the remainder — and it's likely to be a small remainder — that genuinely will have no choice but to either pay more money.

Conservatives only care about these problems insofar as they can be used to trash or undermine the law in its entirety. That's why they never, ever mention any of the millions of people who will or are already benefiting from the law.

The health insurance plans are being "cancelled" because they don't cover things like pre-existing conditions, prescription drugs and more. Now they have to. People are free to renew their plans or shop around for something cheaper.

Health insurance will now include more, most Americans will be spending less, and millions can finally afford it for the first time.

Liberal spin doesn't add up to the truth. You are just spreading more liberal lies. You are very good at lying like most sneaky control freak progs.

The truth is any insurer that wanted to make even a minor change to their policies was FORCED to cancel under an ObamaScare regulation, voted for by the Dementocrats that barred insurers from modifying their existing offerings. So even if an insurer wanted to change their copay or deductible by an amount that reflected the yearly increase in industry standard costs, by law it was canceled.

"The rule essentially prevents insurance companies from keeping their grandfathered status if they make changes to their plans. In practice, insurance companies are loath to leave their plans unchanged so grandfathered plans are disappearing, and people are being forced to change their plans to meet Obamacare's more robust coverage requirements."

"Blue Shield of California recently sent out those notices to more than half of its individual customers, telling them they need to buy more comprehensive policies because of the Affordable Care Act."

"As a result of introducing those new health plans, we could no longer offer the plan that they were currently in," says Steve Shivinsky, a Blue Shield California spokesman. He says those plans will end Dec. 31."

"Jamie Walters, who grows corn on 3,000 acres west of Chicago, got a similar letter from his insurer, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois. His old policy, Walters says, covered him and his wife and three young children for $585 a month with a $5,200 family deductible.

He says he got a rude surprise when he went shopping for a new plan on HealthCare.gov: The cheapest plan will cost him $902 a month.

"That plan, that costs us over 50 percent more a month, changes our deductible from $5,200 to $12,700," Walters says."

Furthermore if you make what the government thinks is too much money you are not eligible for the tax subsidies that are used to offset the premium costs. An adjusted GROSS income of over 90,000 for a family of 4 gets you screwed. That being the case, once again it is the middle class, duel household wage earners and the small business owner who will get fucked in the ass by Obongo and his Gov. teat sucking supporters.

Don't lie, don't spin, don't rinse and repeat the lies that the Obama loving media is trying to pass off as fact. Romero you should probably apply for a job in the Odumbo Whitehouse. You're just as disingenuous as that lying cocksucker Jay Carney.

Once again we see that this is all a matter of elitist liberals telling the American people what is good for them. I guess it never occurred to you that millions of Americans were happy with their AFFORDABLE insurance policies. I guess that wasn't good enough for progs like you and your idols in the Obama Whitehouse. Did you ever stop to think why millions are complaining that their policies are being canceled? Probably not because progs always know what's best for everyone else.

QuoteThere are only two reasons an insurance policy would be "cancelled" by an insurance company as the Affordable Care Act takes effect. One, because the old policy was so tightfisted or otherwise borderline-crooked that it is no longer legal to sell the thing. Or two, because discontinuing insurance policies is what insurance companies do, all the time, and it has nothing to do with the Affordable Care Act and everything to do with a particular insurance company wanting to squeeze profits in particular ways.

Things may be different for others, but on the individual market I can't recall ever having an insurance policy for longer than a few years. We would dutifully pick one. We would pay the ever-increasing premiums for a few years. We would get a nice letter from our insurance company informing us that they are discontinuing that policy because reasons and that we were free to choose their new collection of policies, all notably more expensive than the last one.

So the issue here seems to be either that we're pretending that the normal, jerkish behavior of insurance companies constantly canceling and reissuing polices is somehow the fault of President Barack Obama, or that we have a genuine, deep-seated outrage over insurance companies no longer being able to sell people scammy, near-useless policies because by God, insurance companies should have the right to scam whoever they want. Do I have that right?
