Touch of the Black Death?

Bubonic plague triggers health alert in China after herder infected

TAIPEI — Chinese public health authorities are taking precautions to prevent a bubonic plague outbreak in a remote northern region after a herder contracted the disease, although experts say the risk is low, given the limited number of cases so far and the availability of modern medicine.

The health commission in Bayannur in Inner Mongolia raised its public health warning to its third-highest of four alert levels Sunday and banned the hunting, skinning and transportation of rodents that might carry the bacteria, known as Yersinia pestis.

The municipal government raised its alert level by one notch to "standard plague outbreak alert," which means humans have been infected.

"There is a risk of a human plague epidemic spreading in this city," Bayannur's health commission said in a statement.

Over the past year, China has reported five cases of the disease associated with some of the deadliest pandemics in human history.

The plague caused the Black Death that devastated the population of medieval Europe and repeatedly afflicted Asia and more recently Africa, but it has largely been controlled since the mid-20th century.

World Health Organization spokeswoman Margaret Harris told reporters in Geneva Tuesday that the plague case count in China was low and the agency didn't consider it high risk, but it was monitoring the situation with partners in China and Mongolia.

Officials at Inner Mongolia's regional centre for disease control have warned that the plague may have long been circulating locally and that there is risk of human-to-human transmission, according to a statement posted online by the regional government last month.

The city of Beijing also urged residents Monday not to go camping in Inner Mongolia, a vast strip of scenic grassland and desert that urban dwellers often visit.

This is why Taiwan needs to be in the WHO and part of the global community. They tried warning the world what was going on in Wuhan in early December, but the WHO wouldn't listen because they repeat China's line that Taiwan is not a sovereign country. Now we have a global pandemic ravaging the world economically because the WHO's priority is politics, not public health.

Why pine away for admission in a dodgy org to begin with?

That is near where the old lady was born.

Dodgy it is

However, Taiwan has its ways to know what's happening in China and will state it to warn others.

China of course states only what suits it

For that reason, membership matters which of course is why China fights it

I agree. Taiwan is invaluable to the international community. China doesn't want that prosperous, freedom loving country reporting Beijing's non stop malfeasances.

Taiwan can't even get observer status in the WHO because of China's bullying of other countries.

Taiwan would be a big thorn in the side for China if it was a a member of the UN and allowed to have full diplomatic relations with major countries.

And it's voluntary on the part of all countries.

All shy to ruffle China .. the country that most needs ruffling and a hell of a lot more than merely ruffling

To put in perspective, I just checked population. It's 23.78 million .. which is virtually equal to Australia and 2/3 of Canada

Taiwan was a member of the UN under the title of Republic of China until resolution 2758 in 1971 kicked Taiwan out as it was not China, which it isn't..

If Taiwan reenters the international community it can't be under a ridiculous title like Chinese Taipei....it must be as Taiwan.

Taiwan is a province of the motherland and will never gain admission into international organizations let alone countries recognizing it as a sovereign nation. ac_sothere
