When I was growing up, most families couldn't afford snow tyres. We'd get year round radials and make due.



My mum would get off road tyres and drive in 4x4 setting, but would always end up in a ditch. She would nag us boys about driving 70-100 kph in 2x wheel drive, and we couldn't tell her enough it was about the momentum and not the tyres.



She'd only do 30-40 kph, and still end up nearly rolling on the side of the road.



Her problem was thinking that 4x4 was the be-all and end-all.



So one time my brother and I challenged her to get down the road.... about 4 foot thick but with tracks. We whipped up to a high speed pretty quick and lost her in the horizon.... a mile or two back... and when she didn't come along after 5 minutes, we went back and found her at a nearly 90 degree embankment less than a mile from our home.



The look of shame was big on her face... she was buried in about 10 feet of snow and had to crawl out through her window.



It took 30 minutes of us pulling her from two slight angles together to get her back on the road with straps.



She never spoke about our speed again after that...



Mel is a shitposter but I think if he would get in a ditch, he might appreciate some advice and help....

I miss my Civic hybrid's original extra rock hard fuel saving all season tires, had it on my car for over 10 year, never had an accident either on the main roads.  Not saying winter tires doesn't help, but just drive safe is all that matters.
