The World Health Organization's special envoy on COVID-19 has urged world leaders to stop using lockdowns as the primary control method against the spread of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus, commonly known as the novel coronavirus.



"We in the World Health Organization do not advocate lockdowns as the primary means of control of this virus," David Nabarro told The Spectator in an interview aired on Oct. 8. "The only time we believe a lockdown is justified is to buy you time to reorganize, regroup, rebalance your resources, protect your health workers who are exhausted, but by and large, we'd rather not do it."



Nabarro pointed to the collateral damage that lockdowns are having worldwide, especially among poorer populations.



"Just look at what's happened to the tourism industry, for example in the Caribbean or in the Pacific, because people aren't taking their holidays. Look what's happened to smallholder farmers all over the world because their markets have got dented. Look what's happening to poverty levels. It seems that we may well have a doubling of world poverty by next year. Seems that we may well have at least a doubling of child malnutrition because children are not getting meals at school and their parents, in poor families, are not able to afford it," Nabarro said.



"This is a terrible, ghastly global catastrophe, actually," he said. "And so we really do appeal to all world leaders: Stop using lockdown as your primary control method, develop better systems for doing it, work together and learn from each other, but remember—lockdowns just have one consequence that you must never ever belittle, and that is making poor people an awful lot poorer.



Nabarro isn't the only scientist opposing lockdowns. A number of medical or public health scientists and medical practitioners have signed the Great Barrington Declaration, which states that "current lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health."



The signatories include: "Dr. Martin Kulldorff, professor of medicine at Harvard University, a biostatistician, and epidemiologist with expertise in detecting and monitoring of infectious disease outbreaks and vaccine safety evaluations; Dr. Sunetra Gupta, professor at Oxford University, an epidemiologist with expertise in immunology, vaccine development, and mathematical modeling of infectious diseases; and Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, professor at Stanford University Medical School, a physician, epidemiologist, health economist, and public health policy expert focusing on infectious diseases and vulnerable populations."



The declaration states, "The most compassionate approach that balances the risks and benefits of reaching herd immunity, is to allow those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection, while better protecting those who are at highest risk."



With few exceptions, world leaders followed the lead of the Chinese communist regime when responding to the outbreak of the virus, imposing unprecedented lockdowns. Sweden, which didn't impose a lockdown, experienced a lower percentage of deaths than some locales and nations that set restrictions.



In the United States, President Donald Trump delegated the decisions on lockdown measures to the governors of individual states. In the end, all but a handful of states enacted some sort of restrictive measures.

WASHINGTON—As the coronavirus cases surge worldwide, White House officials warned against a second round of pandemic lockdowns, saying they are "extremely harmful" to public health and the economy in the long run.



"Worldwide endorsement by the science community at the highest levels aligns very strongly with what the president said for months," a senior administration official told reporters on Oct. 12 during a conference call.



Since March, President Donald Trump's policies have centered around protecting the high-risk elderly and vulnerable, opening schools, and restoring society, the official said.



The president's policy is aligned with what "top epidemiologists and health policy experts have been saying—that is, lockdowns do not eliminate the virus; lockdowns are extremely harmful."



Last week, a number of medical or public health scientists and medical practitioners signed the Great Barrington Declaration, which stated that "current lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health."



As of Oct. 12, more than 8,700 health scientists, 22,000 medical practitioners, and 380,000 concerned citizens worldwide have signed the declaration. The signatories include Dr. Martin Kulldorff, professor of medicine at Harvard University; Dr. Sunetra Gupta, professor at Oxford University; and Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, professor at Stanford University Medical School.



"Adopting measures to protect the vulnerable should be the central aim of public health responses to COVID-19," the declaration states. "Those who are not vulnerable should immediately be allowed to resume life as normal."

As I posted in the thread in Rejected, I will reserve comment on this herd immunity stuff. It is true though that the medical community's opinion about lock downs has changed.

Over 34,000 Health Experts Sign Declaration Against COVID-19 Lockdowns, Petition by Epidemiologists Claims

More than 34,000 medical doctors and health scientists from around the world have signed a declaration against lockdowns put in place to curb the spread of COVID-19, saying the measures are causing "irreparable damage," according to an online petition initially created by three epidemiologist from Harvard, Oxford, and Stanford.



As of Oct. 14, close to 25,000 of the signatories signed as medical practitioners, and around 9,500 as public health scientists. They have joined more than 440,000 members of the general public in signing the petition. The petition requires signatories to provide their full name, city, country, zip or postal code, and email, as well as declare if they are signing as a citizen, medical practitioner, or a medical and health scientist.  Some media have raised questions about the validity of some of the signatures, saying they have spotted some using fake names on the petition. The Epoch Times could not verify the status of the signatories. The petition website now says the list of signatories will be made available once it has been verified and approved. The creators of the petition could not be immediately reached for comment.



The petition is co-authored by Dr. Martin Kulldorff, a Harvard professor and epidemiologist with expertise in detecting and monitoring infectious disease; Dr. Sunetra Gupta, an Oxford University professor and epidemiologist with expertise in immunology; and Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, a Stanford University Medical School professor and epidemiologist with expertise in infectious disease and vulnerable populations.



"Coming from both the left and right, and around the world, we have devoted our careers to protecting people. Current lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short- and long-term public health," reads the petition, titled the Great Barrington Declaration, after the Massachusetts town where it was authored by the three experts on Oct. 4.



The declaration says lockdowns result in worsening cardiovascular disease outcomes, fewer cancer screenings, lower childhood vaccination rates, and deteriorating mental health, to name a few issues, all of which will lead to high mortality rates in the years to come.



"Keeping students out of school is a grave injustice," the doctors write.



Instead of shutting everything down until a vaccine is available, the doctors say focus should be on minimizing mortality and social harm until herd immunity is reached. Herd immunity refers to when a population becomes immune to an infectious disease, which the doctors say will eventually be reached for all populations, and can be assisted by, but not dependent upon, a vaccine.



"Fortunately, our understanding of the virus is growing. We know that vulnerability to death from COVID-19 is more than a thousand-fold higher in the old and infirm than the young. Indeed, for children, COVID-19 is less dangerous than many other harms, including influenza," the declaration states.



The declaration says public health officials should aim to protect the most vulnerable population, while allowing those who are not vulnerable to "resume life as normal."

Measures to protect the vulnerable population, the declaration says, can include examples such as minimizing staff rotations at nursing homes, delivering groceries and other essentials to retired people living at home, and the elderly meeting family members outside rather than inside when possible. Meanwhile, all members of society should take simple hygiene measures such as hand-washing and staying home when sick to bring down the herd immunity threshold, the doctors say.



But young, low-risk adults should be allowed to work normally, rather than from home; schools should be opened for in-person teaching; and extracurricular activities such as sports should be resumed, the declaration says.





"Arts, music, sport, and other cultural activities should resume. People who are more at risk may participate if they wish, while society as a whole enjoys the protection conferred upon the vulnerable by those who have built up herd immunity," the declaration says.



Dr. Matt Strauss, one of the Canadian doctors who has put his name to the declaration, told the Toronto Sun that most medical professionals he has talked to agree that the lockdowns are bringing more harm than benefit.



"I don't even think my opinion is a minority opinion among the experts I work with," said Strauss, a critical care physician and professor at Queen's University School of Medicine.
