Australia is mostly desert. In its early days explorers seeking to investigate the inland terrain realised that their mode of transport, horses, were unsuited to desert climes.

So they invited Afghanis to come to Australia to assist the explorers move further inland. Afghanis used camels for obvious reasons.

Once the expeditions were complete, they simply turned the camels loose. With no natural predators and a familiar climate, they proliferated.

The camels were bred from a particularly hardy stockline, and because they were introduced they did not interbreed with other varieties to weaken their particular traits. So they are now highly valued in the middle east.

For much the same reason, Australia also has a large population of water buffalo, having imported them from Indonesia to help till the damp terrain of the far north.
