Liberals, NDP have tentative deal that would keep Trudeau government in power until 2025

The federal Liberals and the New Democrats have worked out a tentative agreement that if finalized, would keep Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government in power until 2025, in exchange for progress on longstanding NDP priorities, CTV News has confirmed.

This is not how democracy is supposed to work. We are finished .. by 2025 there will not be enough of Canada left to put it back together

We might stay another ten years in Canada, earn and save and then move back to Israel. I want a future for my daughter and I don't know if Canada wants the same for her.

Some MPs in the NDP caucus oppose the party's confidence deal with the Liberals, which analysts say could have risks for the NDP in the next election. That is what BC NDP MP Jenny Kwan says.

Coming almost half a year after last fall's indecisive election, in which the plurality winner of votes again lost the election, this current deal again reminds us that at its worst Westminster style democracy can degenerate into something resembling constitutional dictatorship. There is no accountability or oversight on this deal and the two thirds of Canadians who did not vote for Trudeau's party will have no choice but to bide their time and wait until 2025 when then next opportunity for democratic accountability at the ballot box arises.

Here in Canada, assuming the deal sticks, Canadians who legitimately see this new found alliance between Liberals and the NDP as little more than a power grab will be more frustrated than ever about the lack of democratic accountability and trust in our system. Think about the fact that some pretty radical left wing populist ideas, such as taxing the "excess profits" of banks, are now theoretically on the table, even though the large majority of Canadians didn't support such ideas during last fall's election.

But what will really stick in the craw of many Canadians is that a prime minister who used some of the most draconian emergency powers in the democratic world with no justification will now get off absolutely scot-free, thanks to a shabby deal that Canadians didn't vote on nor were consulted about.

What will be the ongoing consequences of this NDP-Liberal alliance? High inflation, debt, more intolerance of non-woke viewpoints.

Quebec Premier François Legault is warning that the new alliance between the federal Liberals and the NDP is going to trigger a confrontation with the provinces, particularly around health care.

In exchange for the NDP's support, the Liberals have agreed to work with the party on several priorities, including a dental-care program for low-income Canadians and national pharmacare.

But Legault says both of those potential programs fall under exclusive provincial jurisdiction, and he adds that the Liberals and NDP are "very centralizing" political parties.

He says the Liberal-NDP alliance "will hit a wall" if it tries to tell Quebec how to spend federal health transfers, adding that Ontario Premier Doug Ford agrees with him that Ottawa should not try to involve itself in areas of provincial jurisdiction, such as health care.

Canada is on the same road to ruin that countries like Argentina, Venezeula and Greece have travelled before. Singh and Trudeau think they can print enough money to avoid the same fate.

Thiel

The NDP will be the big loser in this, not the Tories. The deal would not prevent Trudeau calling an election before 2025 if polls suggested he would win with a firm majority. The deal could mean the "worst of both worlds" — failing to gain credit for policies such as affordable dentistry they pushed for in the deal, but taking the blame if pharmacare is not introduced before the election.

The NDP-Liberal pact could prove a gift to the Tories. The Conservatives see it as a way of painting the NDP and Liberals as interchangeable.

Following on with the natural end results of what Thiel is saying ... this could in the end up costing the NDP a lot of seats.

seats which would mainly add to Liberal total making it even harder to unseat him & his ilk

Further to Thiel, this could in the end cost the NDP a lot of seats. ... seats which would mainly add to Liberal total making it even harder to unseat him & his ilk

I think you are one hundred percent right. This will not end well for the NDP.
