I live in Surrey, British Columbia. My wife and I took a driving trip to Portland and Seattle. About the only good thing to say about Portland and Seattle is that they make Vancouver appear to be a good place to live and raise a family. What awful cities. But, all American cities are undesirable.

I don't know about the entire city, but business owners are leaving downtown Portland.

Portland businesses choose to leave downtown

Some are. Some have moved to the suburbs because of pandemic slow downs and crime.  Others are just starting up.

Some have been burnt down, some have been looted, some can't get insurance, their walk in traffic is scared to enter, but most said fuck it and got the hell out.

There appears to be some truth to what Herman is saying..

Apparently more people are leaving Portland than moving there.

Unaffordable housing, homeless camps, trash, vandalism and looting are cited as reasons for leaving.

The 'Most' part is untrue.

From your link:

" people are packing up and moving to the suburbs, but it's not a Portland-specific phenomenon. It's happening in every major city on the West Coast.

Lee said the city's problems, bad as they are – alone -- aren't always enough to drive locals away. But the problems can make Portland not worth the skyrocketing costs of living here.

"We're really pinning that to affordability, right? When you think about a downtown core -- all these amenities -- restaurants, movie theaters -- across the pandemic they were virtually unusable. Many didn't feel the need to pay that downtown premium anymore, instead searching for more space and affordability in the outer edges of the metro," she said."

Perhaps he meant most of the businesses that are leaving and not most businesses are leaving.

All the cities on the West Coast of North America are run by prog elites, they all pursue the same goals and they all end up with the same problems that make it hard for working class people to stick around. The only difference is that Vancouver and Victoria didn't have vigilantes destroying people's livelihoods while the cops twiddled their thumbs like cities to the South did.

Our new mayor in Calgary wants to implement some of the same policies that Vancouver has that will inevitably lower housing supply, and increase homelessness and poverty like it has in Vancouver.

I never mentioned Oregon state, but the city of Portland lost population last year.

the population in the metro area declined in 2021 by 0.2%, driven by a 1.5% decrease in Multnomah County.

Ya, the vandalism, the looting, the homeless camps, and the garbage didn't influence decisons of businesses and residents to leave. The boarded up windows are the result of the pandemic. Denial is a river in Egypt so say progs.
