Prime Minister Scott Morrison conceded defeat after an election on Saturday and the opposition Labor Party was set to end almost a decade of conservative rule, possibly with the support of pro-environment independents.

Partial results showed Morrison's Liberal-National coalition had been punished by voters in Western Australia and affluent urban seats in particular.

"Tonight, I have spoken to the Leader of the Opposition and the incoming Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese. And I've congratulated him on his election victory this evening," Morrison said, stepping down as leader of his party.

Labor had yet to reach the 76 of the 151 lower house seats required to form a government alone. Final results could take time as counting of a record number of postal votes is completed.

A strong showing by the Greens and a of group of so-called "teal independents," who campaigned on policies of integrity, equality and tackling climate change, means the makeup of the new parliament looks set to be much less climate-skeptic than the one that supported Morrison's pro-coal mining administration.

I hope Australian families aren't forced to struggle financially because of the government elect.

Well thank Christ Albanese is willing to address climate change. Now let's see if he fulfils all of his promises and we don't have another lying muppet like Scomocchio governing the country.

Good luck with him trying to unite a divided nation too. Standing in the centre and governing all Australians will be a massive task for sure.

It won't be easy for Albanese

What the hell is this prog clown going to do about climate change besides take a bunch of planes to the next summit and promise Australian tax dollars to China. Australia, much like Canada is a bit player. The real action needs to be in the emerging nations who don't give a damn if the climate keeps changing or not.  Any Aussie politician that says he or she can stop the climate from changing is lying to you. What they will do is make life more expensive and make sure there are fewer job opportunities.

The climate always changes, that much we know. But reducing our carbon footprint and reducing population growth will hopefully make a difference in the foreseeable future. We've decimated massive portions of the planet, destroyed vulnerable ecosystems, driven both fauna and flora into extinction...the list goes on and on. I could post almost countless facts of cold hard truths that would go on deaf ears. Humankind is a plague and out numbers need to drop drastically.

Breakfall

As far as Albanese goes...time will tell. Politicians are mostly full of deceit and broken promises. Hopefully this new prime minister steps up and makes a positive difference, because Australia is lagging behind when it comes to cleaning up it's act. We are still the 14th worst carbon emitters    of fossil fuels and contribute 1% to global emissions. Given our low population in Australia...that's just shit behaviour.

What was the final seat count?

"Six seats remain in doubt as vote counting continues after Saturday's election.

With Labor needing two more seats to form a majority government, there's a lot riding on them.

The Labor Party currently has 74 lower house seats and needs to get to 76 to govern without the help of crossbenchers.

Of the six seats that remain in doubt, Labor is projected to be ahead or considered likely to win in four of them. "

Australians said climate change was their number one issue. As if any government can stop it.

Australians already voted out a carbon tax. Do they want one now.
