Government tables bill to limit handguns, pledges to buy back assault-style weapons

New gun control legislation the federal government tabled Monday includes a national freeze on the purchase, sale, importation and transfer of handguns in Canada.

The government also is pledging to start buying back thousands of banned assault-style weapons before the end of the year.

While the proposal falls short of a full ban on handguns, it would effectively limit their number in Canada.

Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino presented the bill, C-21, in the House of Commons Monday.

It was mentioned at the start of Global News, but I didn't watch to get any details.

Here is what Conservative Party leadership candidate Leslyn Lewis had to say about bill C-21.

The Liberals have done it again. Put forward more legislation on firearms that won't actually make people safer.

They need to stop playing politics with the safety of our communities. For years law enforcement have been trying to tell them their handgun bans won't do anything to stop criminals.

They refuse to take our border security seriously to keep weapons that are already illegal out of the hands of gangs and other criminals.

What's worse, they are doing all of this while actually allowing changes to our laws that will let violent criminals out on the streets sooner.

They refuse to challenge the Supreme Court's ruling that will shorten sentences of the most dangerous murderers and terrorists, but they think it will keep our country safer if they continue to crackdown on law-abiding hunters, farmers and sport shooters.

We should not play politics with public safety.

The Liberals insist on passing more legislation that does nothing to protect Canadians and cracks down further on law-abiding citizens.

I saw that. They're going to use Canada as a lab and then use the same tactics on the US

Trudeau and his unofficial coalition partner, the authoritarian left NDP have carte blanche to dictate to Canadians because they enjoy a parliamentary majority. It will not be so easy South of the bborder.

The handgun cap is a distraction from Trudeau putting violent criminals back on the streets.

Trudeau's new gun law doesn't target gun crime

In the 2019 election he campaigned on allowing municipalities to ban handguns, an unworkable measure that would do nothing except keep handguns as a political issue for him to campaign on. It was the same in the 2021 election when he campaigned on allowing provinces to ban handguns but shied away from a national ban.

Now, Trudeau is putting forward legislation that won't allow anyone new to buy, import or transfer a handgun — legally.

This is the big problem with this entire game Trudeau is playing. The legislation he says will make you safer is more concerned with legal, licenced gun owners, not the gang members shooting up the streets.

There is a measure to increase the maximum penalty for gun smuggling and gun trafficking from 10 years to 14 years, which is a good thing, but this same government is lowering sentences for these same offences in another bill. In fact, they are scrapping the mandatory minimum for a number of serious gun crimes in Bill C-5.

Currently, importing a gun illegally carries with it a mandatory minimum of three years on the first offence and a five-year minimum on the second offence. The Trudeau Liberals are scrapping that along with mandatory minimums on using a firearm in commission of a crime, possessing a restricted or prohibited weapon, possession of loaded handgun, possession of weapon obtained through crime, weapons trafficking and using a gun to commit robbery or extortion.

How can you claim to be getting tough on gun crime when reducing mandatory minimum sentences on crimes like robbery and extortion with a firearm?

The increase in the maximum sentences for gun smuggling is pretty much the only part of the legislation aimed at criminals using guns. The bill spends more time dealing with changes to who is considered a security guard than it does dealing with criminals and their use of firearms.

This bill focuses on guns, it focuses on licenced gun owners, but it doesn't focus on crime. It's a classic distraction tactic from Trudeau and his government that makes it look like they are doing something to tackle an issue when they aren't.

If the Trudeau Liberals proposed sensible measures to deal with issues like bail reform and the border, they would have my full support. Instead, they give us theatre and grand gestures that won't solve the problem.

Canada hads had very strict handgun laws for a very long time. Handguns used in crimes in Canada are often smuggled across the border and Trudeau has made the border less safe. Bill C-21 is virtue signalling and progressives will buy it.

Liberal gun control bill a grandiose but ultimately hollow gesture

This is simple virtue-signalling by the Liberals intended to impress their followers, most of whom know nothing about firearms or firearms crime except the sensational cases they see in the news.

And it is yet another attempt by the Trudeau government to win moral points by being anti-American.

It is no coincidence Bill C-21 was introduced the week following the appalling mass killings at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

It's just like Trudeau's preening and posturing immediately after a potential U.S. Supreme Court decision was leaked last month that would remove the right to abortion on demand — in the United States. Trudeau proclaimed "every woman in Canada has a right to a safe and legal abortion," as if there were any threat at all to Canada's abortion rules, which have been completely open since 1988.

Now, even though both Canada and the United States have comparatively high rates of civilian firearms ownership (on a per capita basis, we are second only to the Americans among highly developed countries), Canadians for cultural reasons don't load up with guns, strap hundreds of rounds of ammo to their bodies and go off killing indiscriminately at grocery stores, schools, shopping malls and industrial plants.

But that reassurance isn't good enough for Liberals. The knowledge that Canada does not have a killing culture (as distinct from a gun culture) to match the Americans is insufficient for "progressives" in this country. They need to persecute our gun owners just to prove their snootiness.

They have to make grandiose but ultimately hollow gestures, such as Bill C-21, to signal to the world that they are better than the politicians south of the border.

How is a freeze on the number of handguns — of which there are roughly one million legal ones in Canada — going to prevent mass murders or even gun crime in general?

Chew on these facts for a minute: Handguns have been strictly controlled in Canada since 1934.

To be allowed to buy one, you have for decades been required to take lengthy safety courses, submit to rigorous mental and criminal screening and wait weeks if not months for a permit.

After jumping through those hoops, you must have two safes in your home, one for your handgun and another for your ammunition. You must also have a separate permit to transport your handgun just from your home to a shooting range.

The handgun must be in a locked case in your locked trunk and you may not stop anywhere along the route. Not even to pee or get gas.

Yet handguns make up about two-thirds of the guns used in crime in Canada.

Hmm. Why would that be? Are Canadian gun owners a bunch of rogue cowboys who routinely flout these strict laws?

No. The vast majority of handguns used in crime in Canada — certainly in excess of 90 per cent — are smuggled in from the United States.

And smuggled guns will not be stopped by the Trudeau government placing a freeze on the number of legal handguns.

In short, Bill C-21 will do nothing to keep pistols and revolvers out of the hands of those gang members and drug dealers who use them to commit crimes.

We should be celebrating the fact that Canadian firearms owners are safe, responsible neighbours who don't run around shooting up our communities. Yet once again the Liberals are making them scapegoats for high-profile gestures simply designed to confirm the Trudeau-ites smug belief in their own superiority.

We might have know something stupid like this was coming. Open borders and a cap on legal purchases of handguns. Ya, that will stop gun violence in Toronto.

It aint easy to get a restricted PAL in Canada. I couldn't, I got a criminal record for violence. Even if you get it, the rules are so extreme around handling transportation and storage, I could not be bothered even if I could have gotten a restricted PAL.

Hunting is a part rural Canadian culture. This Liberal givernment like the one of Jean Chretien has been trying to restrict hunting.

Very predictable. Bill C-21 does not make Canada safer.

The problem with gun crime in Canada comes from smuggling. But, Trudeau will not enforce our border security.

Chile is following the same path.

They want to ban their sale and not only that, remove every single weapon on civilian hands from the country
