The following joke, told around Southern California, exemplifies the true substance of ethnicity in humor, for it encompasses no less than four races and three religious groups.

Why is Sunday morning the best time to be on the Los Angeles Freeways?

The Catholics are in church.

The Protestants are still asleep.

The Jews are in Palm Springs.

The Indians are restricted to the reservation.

The Chinese are stuffing fortune cookies.

The Blacks are stealing hubcaps.

And the Mexicans can't get their cars started.

The most popular kind of ethnic joke is the putdown joke, which ridicules specific "character traits" of a particular group. The person telling the joke wants you to believe that these traits are true.

In analyzing the above joke, we see that certain ethnic group characteristics have been exaggerated for comedic purposes. Obviously, all Catholics are not in church, as all Protestants are not asleep, all Jews are not vacationing in Palm Springs, Indians are not restricted to the reservation, the Chinese don't stuff fortune cookies, most Blacks are decent law-abiding citizens, and not all Mexicans have cars.
