PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine's Democratic secretary of state on Thursday removed former President Donald Trump from the state's presidential primary ballot under the Constitution's insurrection clause, becoming the first election official to take action unilaterally as the U.S. Supreme Court is poised to decide whether Trump remains eligible to return to the White House.

The Trump campaign said it would appeal Bellows' decision to Maine's state courts, and Bellows suspended her ruling until that court system rules on the case. In the end, it is likely that the nation's highest court will have the final say on whether Trump appears on the ballot in Maine and in the other states.

With the Colorado Republican Party's appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court to keep former president and current GOP front-runner Donald Trump on the state's primary ballot, President Trump is near certain to stay on the ballot.

The Colorado Secretary of State's office, which oversees elections in the state, said that "Donald Trump will be included as a candidate on Colorado's 2024 Presidential Primary Ballot when certification occurs on January 5, 2024, unless the U.S. Supreme Court declines to take the case or otherwise affirms the Colorado Supreme Court ruling."

It's the same situation on Maine. Trump stays on the ballot, unless courts rule otherwise.

A Republican state representative in Maine is pursuing the impeachment of Secretary of State Shenna Bellows for her ruling this week disqualifying Donald Trump from the state's primary ballot.

Rep. John Andrews filed a request to the Maine Revisor's Office seeking to officially impeach Bellows because she is "barring an American citizen and [the] 45th President of the United States, who is convicted of no crime or impeachment, their right to appear on a Maine Republican Party ballot in March."

He stated that Trump has met all the qualifications necessary to launch a presidential bid.

"Hyper-partisanship is on full display" in Bellows' decision, Andrews said in a statement on social media. "Banana Republic isn't just a store at the mall."
