The end of video screens in aircraft

On a recent flight from Singapore to Cambodia, I flew in a Boeing 737 operated by Silk Air, a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines.



In those smaller, short hop aircraft, the seats don't have built in video entertainment, simply because the aircraft cannot accommodate the weight and scale of the modern in-flight entertainment systems.



Reading the in-flight information, I discovered that the aircraft had built in wi-fi. I logged in with my iPhone and could select from a number of movies, TV shows and other visual entertainment. No built in screens and controls.



It worked really well.

In the foreseeable future, this will be a standard feature on all aircraft. Its cheaper, easier and reduces the weight of the aircraft.



But...when travelling...carry your iPhone or iPad kiddies...or the flight will be very dull indeed.

Might as well.  I liked having their choice of movies over what I can come up with on my own (I am very behind in knowing about current movies).  I will probably bring some kind of a paddy thing on my next trip.
