Canadian groundhog Fred la Marmotte died before he could predict the arrival of the spring season on Groundhog Day on Thursday.

Fred, 9, was found dead overnight by Roberto Blondin, the organizer of the annual la Jour de Fred event — or Fred's day — in Val-d'Espoir, Quebec, Reuters reported.

According to The Guardian, Fred showed "no vital signs" after Blondin tried to wake him, local media reported. Blondin said Fred may have died last year while in hibernation, per Reuters. "In life, the only thing that's certain is that nothing is certain," Blondin said, according to the outlet. "Well, this year it's true. It's sadly true. I announce to you that Fred is dead."

The event went on without Fred, as Blondin gave a stuffed toy version of a groundhog to a child standing in the sun to honor the tradition.

A shadow was cast, forecasting that spring will be delayed and that winter will be prolonged for another six weeks.

Some redneck farmer must have gotten into the swish and shot it.

Doesn't matter, somebody is stuffing that groundhog and putting on the mantle over the fireplace.

They're very destructive. In a bean field, if they're left unchecked, they'll eat em bare. They also tunnel under buildings. We had one dig under a building I worked in and it got into the 3 phase cabinet and got electrocuted. It was a disgusting mess to clean up.

They built a colony on the grounds of the OPP headquarters in Orillia. Groundhogs or marmots are big.

We got ground squirrels here. Badgers make their holes bigger to get at them and cattle step in the big holes and can break a leg. That's why I shoot badgers on site. They also decimate my chicken coop.

One of the most accomplished pop music composers of the 20th century, Burt Bacharach, has died at age 94. The musical maestro behind 52 top 40 hits including "Alfie," "Walk on By," "Promises, Promises," "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," "What the World Needs Now is Love" and "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?," Bacharach had an untouchable run in the 1960s and 1970s with a wide range of pop, R&B and soul artists. According to the Associated Press, Bacharach died on Wednesday (Feb. 8) at his home in Los Angeles of natural causes.

Working with lyricist partner Hal David, Bacharach and David were dubbed the "Rodgers & Hart" of the '60s, with a unique style featuring instantly hummable melodies and atypical arrangements that folded in everything from jazz and pop to Brazilian grooves and rock.

Many of their songs were popularized by Dionne Warwick, whose singing style inspired Bacharach to experiment with new rhythms and harmonies, composing such innovative melodies as "Anyone Who Had a Heart" and "I Say a Little Prayer."

Bacharach is survived by his adopted son, Christopher, as well as two children with his fourth wife, Jane Hansen, Oliver and daughter Raleigh.
