It is a sweet potato



What's in a name? When it comes to the yam, a bit of confusion. The truth is what you've been calling a yam is most likely a sweet potato. Even more, it's possible that you've never even tasted a yam!



That sweet, orange-colored root vegetable that you love so dearly is actually a sweet potato. Yes, all so-called "yams" are in fact sweet potatoes. Depending on the variety, sweet potato flesh can vary from white to orange and even purple. The orange-fleshed variety was introduced to the United States several decades ago. In order to distinguish it from the white variety everyone was accustomed to, producers and shippers chose the English form of the African word "nyami" and labeled them "yams."

Most of us have never even tasted a yam which grow mainly in Africa & parts of Asia - which is OK because they don't taste near as good and fall far short  in nutrisional values

I like sweet potato fries, but my husband is also a traditionalist when it comes to the rare times he has fries.

Just made the dark orange ones, finished off by slicing in half, baste with margarine & brown sugar & broil



curiosity got me to check on nutrient  value of sweets vs. yams only to find that what I had thought were yams were only the orange version of seet taters



btw - sweets (orange or white) win out nutriant - wise 2 / 1

I knew they were not the same. A lot of pubs sell sweet potato fries. They are not bad, but I prefer wings or nachos when we go out.

They do grow on you. I see more pubs we go to have them on their menus. At first I thought they were a mismatch for draft lager. Don't get me wrong, I prefer wings in a sports bar. But when they do not have 25 cent wings or nachos, they are a good substitute.
