What do we expect from the United Nitwaits. The same organization that gushed over Saudi Arabia and China's environmental improvements, but heaped scorn on Australia and Canada. Worse than that is our man-child PM has a crush on that deeply flawed organization.
QuoteLast week, the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) wrapped up its annual session in New York. During its deliberations, the CSW found only one country to condemn for its treatment of women.

Was it Sudan where in many regions imams promote female genital mutilation to prevent women from deriving pleasure during intercourse? In northern Sudan, it is estimated that nearly 90% of married women have suffered such treatment.

Nope. The CSW did not see fit to condemn Sudan. Indeed, last year the permanent representative from Sudan was made one of the vice-chairs of the CSW.

Was it Saudi Arabia, where women still may not drive, vote or own property, and may be publicly caned if seen outside their homes with a man who is not a relative?

Good guess, but no.

The United Arab Emirates? The UAE was praised for some marginal improvements for women such as a slight uptick in the percentage of women in the workforce. But what the UN's CSW overlooked, of course, was a report from Human Rights Watch that UAE law still makes women the virtual chattel of their "male guardian."

Human Rights Watch reports that last year a UAE man was acquitted for nearly beating his wife to death. She had taken a job without his permission, so a court ruled his assault was justified.

The UAE rep was elevated to a CSW vice-chair this year.

Was the offender singled out by the UN China for its forced abortions and sterilization, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia or any one of two dozen other countries where rights organizations conclude that the women are at "high risk?"

Nope.

According to the UN, the only country worthy of condemnation is Israel, where women have the same economic, legal and political rights as men, but where the army sometimes during military actions against terrorists who are hiding amongst civilians has killed Palestinian women and girls by accident.

It's the same with the UN Human Rights Council. The body regularly condemns Israel – the only true democracy in the Middle East – while promoting the representatives of brutal dictatorships to leadership and oversight positions.

The UN is irredeemably biased, useless and corrupt. But according to Prime Minister Selfie, Canada should not only be more engaged, we should trust the UN to screen our refugees from Syria.

Israel could learn a lot about equality for women from Saudi Arabia and Sudan. :laugh3:

Strange. What did the UN condemn Israel for? The article doesn't say. Do you even know what Israel was condemned for, Shen Li?

According to this press release many countries and issues were brought up:

Any party that makes withdrawing from the United Nitwits part of it's platform gets my vote.
QuoteBy a recorded vote of 20 in favour to 2 against (Israel, United States) with 11 abstentions, the Commission approved a draft resolution entitled, "Situation of and assistance to Palestinian women" (document E/CN.6/2016/L.3).

Speaking on that item before the vote, the representative of Israel called the text an attack on his country and said it failed to hold the Palestinian leadership accountable, did nothing to help Palestinian women and only advanced the agenda of those who sought to use the Commission as a political platform.  Year after year, the Commission singled out one country only, with not a word to say about countries where women were treated like second-class citizens, unable to drive or leave the house without their husband's permission.  He asked delegates to vote against the text and to commit themselves to ending an annual charade that endangered the Commission's credibility by indulging the whim of one party.

Israel singled out at UN for women's right violations

QuoteUNITED NATIONS — The UN Commission on the Status of Women approved a resolution Friday blaming Israel for "the grave situation of Palestinian women."

Israel's UN Ambassador Ron Prosor denounced the resolution saying it was further proof of the UN's bias against Israel, as it was the only country singled out by the 45-member commission.

"If anyone has ever doubted that the UN is biased against Israel, today we got further proof. Of the 193 member states in this institution, dozens slaughter innocent civilians and impose discriminatory laws that marginalize women and yet they all get a free pass. The Commission on the Status of Women itself includes some of the worst violators of human rights, as Iran and Sudan," he said.

"Honor killings in the Palestinian Authority are a matter of daily occurrence, and employment of women stands at only 17%. It is time for the Palestinians to finally take responsibility for something. Their mistreatment of women is a chance to start taking responsibility. It's not enough for the Palestinians to cynically exploit this institution; they've now made it their mission to turn the Commission on the Status of Women into a politically charged forum," he went on.

The resolution, sponsored by the Palestinians and South Africa, was adopted by a vote of 27-2 with 13 abstentions. The United States and Israel voted against it and European Union members abstained.

"Situation of and assistance to Palestinian women"? Doesn't sound like much of a condemnation to me. There's still nothing about what Israel is allegedly being condemned over. Condemned for what exactly?

And you can see by my link for the UN press release that many countries and issues were discussed. Why is the Calgary Sun saying that only Israel is being singled out when that's not the case?

Grave situation of Palestinian does not sound like a condemnation to you? You are so frickin dishonest.

Romero

Geez. Condemnation for what? What is it that Israel is allegedly doing?

I lived in the Middle East. "Situation of and assistance to Palestinian women" (document E/CN.6/2016/L.3), but no similar vote on Saudi Arabia. The UN is nearly as dishonest as you are.

Romero

So you have no idea what Israel's allegedly being condemned for. Another informative Sun News article!
