What flavour is red velvet anyway? It looks like strawberry or raspberry combined with chocolate.

Red velvet cake is a chocolate buttermilk cake. Red food coloring is used but its actually the acidic properties in the buttermilk that help bring out the deep red pigment in the cocoa powder. The buttermilk also makes the cake very moist.
