smell the glove

No shit!  I knew what I wanted, but just couldn't remember the name!

Power pop from 1980, but this little known track was well ahead of its time, IMHO...

Found it!  Good road trip tune...

Next time just google the chorus or part of the song itself.

Nobody would have...

As a shitty guitarist, I also study the evolution of music differently than many others do...

For 1980, this single track (the rest of their shit was shit), was ahead of the game, IMHO...

Three chord power pop...  Made Blink 182 millions...  It started here.

Sounds like proto-punk to me.

One of the recent bands who I think emulates this sound is The Struts.

Will check their sound...

The Struts are no good.  Nothing original.  Will have no lasting power.

The real test, is does it hold up 20 years later?  THAT is the question.  Elvis does.  Nirvana does.  Now, I know that musically neither of them were particularly talented, but for some reason they've held up.

This track does stand the test of time, IMHO:

I don't think originality is the chief determining factor in what music stands the test of time.

The bands that have made something catchy and influential through it aren't always bringing something new to the table.

I usually play the songs by ear on the piano.

I hear 'em on the radio, then I try to mimic what I've heard.
