The Scorpions are from Germany and have been in business for decades.  They've recorded a lotta music and have had a good number of hits. Time and again, however, my experience has been that some of a band or artist's best stuff isn't a hit.  IMHO, "Sails of Charon" is one such song. From the Scorpion's fourth album, "Taken By Force," it features the great Uli Jon Roth on guitar the last time he recorded with them.

This song isn't nearly as well known as many other Lynyrd Skynyrd numbers. It was written sometime between 1970 and 1971 by Allen Collins and Ronnie Van Zant. It had originally been intended to be part of their first album, however, it ended up being first put on an album after the terrible plane crash. Frankly, although it isn't quite as heavily guitar driven as many later Skynyrd numbers, it is quite good:

I had his actual first album on vinyl, that was passed down to me from my mother. Later on, in 2011 when he was touring Australia at 69 years, I was privileged to watch him from a dinner table performing. The whole night I bought him red wine whilst he played to a limited audience of only 300.

We got to chat later on when he was signing merchandise, and my wife took a photo of us together arm in arm.
We actually had a good laugh together, when I told him that my mother clipped me on the back of the ear for singing "I Wonder" down the supermarket aisle as a young kid back in '76.

The Marmalade was formed in Glasgow, Scotland under a different name in 1961.  By 1966, they did become The Marmalade. They're still in business, although all original members are gone. This beautifully poignant song was released in 1970 and made it to #3 in the USA:

Lynyrd Skynyrd's second album was named "Second Helping."  Released in 1974, it eventually went double platinum. This song from the album was written by Ronnie Van Zant and the great Ed King.  It wasn't released as a single, but I dare say it was and remains one of their best songs:

I'm surprised Layla has yet to be posted. Or, perhaps it has already been posted, but I missed it. Well, either way I am posting it now. One of the all-time iconic rock tunes, it was originally released in 1970 but did not become a hit until its rerelease in 1972.

The name of the band was Derek and the Dominoes, but everyone in the know knows it was headed by Eric Clapton, with contributions by Duane Allman and others. As for the song, it's no secret that it was about George Harrison's former wife, Patti Boyd, whom Eric was madly in love with even though George was one of his best friends. The origin of the song title is explained by AI as:

The title was inspired by The Story of Layla and Majnun, a 12th-century Persian love story by Nizami Ganjavi about a man driven to madness by an unattainable love.
