Nk is wasting its time and money.

Even if it did manage to develop an ICBM capable of striking the west, America's anti missile system will knock it out of the sky before it can do any harm.

In 2013, the Pentagon deployed 14 missile interceptors to Guam in response to the North Korean threats to deliver nuclear weapons to the United States. The NMD(National Missile Defense) program is limited in scope and designed to counter a relatively small ICBM attack. Can North Korea get past it? I don't know, but Washington is not taking any chances.

I don't think we have much to fear just yet.

I remember when we were ACC you posted something about North Korea must push sabre rattling to the edge from time to time and that South Koreans are not too worried about it.

The family regime in the North is willing to push the envelope to remain in power. It's  happened many times.

How far are they willing to push it though?

This has happened before when their is a change at the top of the Kim family dynastic rule. When Kim Jong Un's grandfather, Kim Il Sung died, his son Kim Jong Il took over and set North Korea on a path to becoming a nuclear armed nation. In the mid nineties, Bill Clinton would never accept a nuclear armed North and the US would not rule out a military action to stop them. Kim Jong Il did that more for domestic consumption as he did to send a message to the South, Japan and the US. He needed to establish his bonafides with the generals. Twenty years later and the dynasty once again has passed from father to son. Kim Jong Un has has no military background and needs to earn the respect of the generals.  At the same time, there is a new administration in Washington that he also needs to send a message.

Back to  your question, how far will North Korea push it? Further than Washington will. North Korea will continue to expand their  long range missile capabilities. Washington,  Tokyo  and Seoul will grudgingly accept it in exchange for continued peace in the region.

You have family still in South Korea don't you Seoul?

Do they not feel any worry when these tensions rise from time to time?

I have relatives in Korea. Like most people in the South they go about their day to day business and don't concern themselves with Pyongyang's chest thumping. They have seen it all before. They know the nuclear threat is the only  card they have to play.

The failed missile test was on a  medium range not an ICBM.

But with the THAAD deployed in SK and NK's missile technology still premature, it just looks like a waste of a perfect opportunity.  ac_unsure  Not to mention China now wants to boycott all Korean products as long as this keeps on dragging on...

Waste of an opportunity for which country. Not North Korea anyway.

If they can't get a medium range in the air, an ICBM is well out of reach.

I can foresee a Chinese led coup taking over NK, and a Chinese friendly puppet Government put in place.

The US will then withdraw.

The North Korean regime is despised, but no country really wants it to collapse.

China would be far happier with a Communist government that aligns with China's interests, in return for the removal of all US forces from the region.

The US would accommodate that if it guarantees no nukes and no more provocation.

The NK government is a deranged, deluded and brainwashed gang of standover men, with nothing in their hands but blanks.

As China sees its interests more and more in the West, they will see taking control of NK as a smart move.

I mean for SK and the US if they want to take this chance to unify both countries.  But then maybe the reason behind all this is not exactly b/c of NK, but to keep an eye on China and Russia while using NK as an excuse to keep the THAAD stationed in SK.  ac_umm

US forces will never be removed from the region and it has nothing to do with Pyongyang.

Nobody wants a unified Korean peninsula anytime soon. It would destabilize the region.

China wants to annex Taiwan soon, by force if necessary.
