Quote from: "Blurt"Have you read The Children of Húrin?

I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I've contemplated it. They are covered in the Silmarilion and even more in Unfinished Tales. After I read all that I decided it was break time lol.
I've come here to chew bubble gum, and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum.

I read it twice as well....first time I was 15. I had just read LOTR and I was deeply dissapointed in The Silmarillian. As you say, it's a difficult read. The second time I was in college and I took 180 degree turn on my feeling for it. I actually enjoyed it immensely.

I'm a huge fan of Tolkien as well but not as much as I used to be....I think the movies kind of killed it for me. Don't get me wrong....LOTR was a very ambitious attempt at bringing the books to life and Jackson hit the mark in so many ways (The Hobbit not so much) but it brought a kind of commercialism to the the story that is sort of off-putting to me. Suddenly everyone is a LOTR fan and most of these fans had never even cracked the binding of any of the books.

I heard that The Silmarillian was in the works....that's where movie making will separate the men from the boys. I'm not sure 3 movies are nearly enough to cover it though.

Totally agree on second time of Sil! It was grueling the first time lol.

I also agree that they did an excellent job on LotR vs Hobbit, too much CGI characters, I liked the use of real people as Orcs and such. I'll also admit I had only seen the cartoon movies from the 70s, and not read the books early on. I seen the movies first. I was hooked when I seen the Fellowship of the Ring. I saw part 2 twice at the theater and 3 times at part 3 lol. I clapped at the end of part 3 and got everyone in the theater clapping lol. I almost dressed in my Gandalf costume and went to part 3. I made my own Gandalf costume lol. I had my son be Frodo around that time and I took him trick or treating, I loved that. A few years ago after losing a lil weight and drinking with my brother, we decided to break out my costume box and try stuff on. I got the notion that I could fit into my son's Frodo costume lol, he was 5 back then when he wore it lol. I got it all on but the pants, couldnt get them over my cheeks lol. Later around Halloween I improvised, put on a white shirt under the top to cover my belly, and shorts. Went to the club like that lol. I finally read all the books last year. I had went through a phase where I didnt read for a while, so it was nice to start reading those. Was a great adventure lol. Didnt want them to end.
