...you find all sorts of interesting things. Some not so pleasant.

I have discovered that an ancestor was a sailor during World War 1, on the HMS Indefatigable, pictured below;

It was involved in a major sea battle called the Battle of Jutland, near Denmark. The Indefatigable was a state of the art modern battle cruiser with significant firepower.

"Indefatigable was sunk on 31 May 1916 during the Battle of Jutland, the largest naval battle of the war. Part of Vice-Admiral Sir David Beatty's Battlecruiser Fleet, she was hit several times in the first minutes of the "Run to the South", the opening phase of the battlecruiser action. Shells from the German battlecruiser Von der Tann caused an explosion ripping a hole in her hull, and a second explosion hurled large pieces of the ship 200 feet (60 m) in the air. Only two of the crew of 1,019 survived."

My great, great uncle was one of the 1017 who were killed.

Frood

I found out my great great grandmother was a trollop somewhere in Germany who had three husbands by the time she was 30 and a number of kids from each. DNA testing confirmed our great great grandfather was a 50 something Jewish farmer who scored a racy teenage wife I believe in the 1870's or so.

She only divorced one of them. The rest died of old age or too many orgasms.
Blahhhhhh...

Yes.

For a variety of reasons, my family history has been largely unknown until relative recently.

I found out only a week ago my great grandfather was technically Russian...Poland was a part of Russia when he was born. I think I can apply for a Russian passport!!!

Zetsu

That's kind of depressing knowing your uncle lost his life in battle against the Germans, but at least at the same time its one of the few unfortunate things to be proud of.
Permanently off his rocker

Bricktop

I felt a genuine sadness. 1000 lives lost in a few minutes, for absolutely no good purpose whatever.

Just make sure you vote for Vladimir Putin or else.

Bricktop

You can't vote for anyone else. All his opponents are in gaol..or worse.

Wazzzup

I have an ancestor that came over on the mayflower.  So at least part of me has been here since the beginning of the US.

I've met a few black people with the same last name (its somewhat unusual).  So I am quite sure members of my family had slaves at some point.

I wish we could find out more about the lives of our ancestors during the thirty five years of Japanese colonial rule.

Bricktop

I'm stuck with my Polish ancestry...much of the Polish family records were destroyed by the Soviets when they closed down the churches.

Frood

Blahhhhhh...

Bricktop

Actually, it says "Russian Polish" in his documents.

Poland was, in fact, a part of Russia at that time, like Ukraine, Georgia and some Baltic States.
