SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Reuters) - California will block the transport of petroleum from new offshore oil rigs through its state, officials told Reuters, a move meant to hobble the Trump administration's effort to vastly expand drilling in U.S. federal waters.

California's threat to deny pipeline permits for transporting oil from new leases off the Pacific Coast is the latest step by states trying to halt the biggest proposed expansion in decades of federal oil and gas leasing. Officials in Florida, North and South Carolina, Delaware and Washington, have also warned drilling could despoil beaches, harm wildlife and hurt lucrative tourism industries.

"I am resolved that not a single drop from Trump's new oil plan ever makes landfall in California," Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, chair of the State Lands Commission and a Democratic candidate for governor, said in an emailed statement.

"It is certain that the state would not approve new pipelines or allow use of existing pipelines to transport oil from new leases onshore," wrote the commission, charged with permitting pipelines in California.

California has also clashed with President Donald Trump's administration on a range of other issues from climate change to automobile efficiency regulations to immigration.

Its getting to the point where california may need to be kicked out of the united states or maybe sanctioned like a rogue foreign power.  the fed could make it tough on CA by not sending grant money to their universities and such and of course they could arrest people who refuse to follow federal law.

Just like with Obama wiretapping, the libs think their disrespect for democracy "resistance" bullshit  is cute, but some very well may end up sitting on jail cells because of it, before all is said and done.  They certainly would deserve it.

Are they trying to block pipelines after the oil is produced like BC and Quebec or are they saying no production in the first place?

Frood

California should be stripped of any federal funds and moveable infrastructure until they either start acting like a member of the US, or they leave the union. But if they leave, a wall gets built around it and they must defer to existing rules about maritime borders and cannot host the vessels, troops, or bases of US adversaries.

Those Californians who wish to leave may do so until the time of seceding. After that, they must apply like any other migrant based on merit.
Blahhhhhh...

It does seem that California is copying the antics of British Columbia.

The whole idea of a federation of States is a legacy of different times.

They should be abandoned forthwith.

In Canada coastal waters fall under federal jurisdiction. However, BC uses stall tactics like this new bullshit enviro review so that investors get frustrated and look elsewhere.

Theoretically I like decentralization, but it does lead to expensive overlap.

Do you mean no provinces or states? If so, what would be better about that?

This is bad of course and an overreach of  California's authority. But, the US has pipeline infrastructure in place or approved to become an LNG and crude oil export powerhouse. We have only one customer and that prevents us from getting international prices. With increased production from the US and full existing pipelines, the discount now on Western Canadian Select is close to fifty per cent.
