Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he nationalized the Trans Mountain project because he wants to move ahead with it. But what if that wasn't the only thing he was trying to complete with Tuesday's announcement that the feds were taking the project off of Kinder Morgan's hands for $4.5 billion?

Maybe he made the deal because it would make it easier to advance something else that he covets much more – the carbon tax.

Right now, there are a lot of people taking Trudeau at his word that the reason he bought the pipeline was to build the pipeline. That may be one reason. It's not necessarily the only one.

Take a look at what he said on Monday when rumours of the deal first broke: "We're going to get this pipeline built because we know that Canadians know that we need to both build a strong economy – which includes getting our resources to new markets safely and securely – while at the same time protecting the environment, which means bringing in world class ocean protection plans the pipeline provides cover for the carbon tax.

And the timing's all very interesting, given that the carbon tax is now more unpopular than ever such that the government needs an added excuse to ram it through.

So don't bet on the feds being eager champions of a quickly constructed pipeline. It simply isn't their top priority. Carbon tax first, pipeline second.

Trudeau is an empty headed puppet. Radical environmentalist Gerald Butts pulls his strings. Approving this one and only pipeline while making it impossible for future pipelines to be built provides cover for the gouging his government will give Canadians through a nationally imposed carbon tax.

An interview the PM did with the National Observer back in February supports this: "Trudeau confirmed that expanding market access for the oilsands industry through a project like Trans Mountain was 'part of the equation' on climate change as early as 2015. At that time, his government was pushing for ambitious global targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at international negotiations in Paris. Trudeau was also relying on action from Premier Rachel Notley's NDP government in Alberta that pledged to put a price on pollution and cap emissions from the oilsands. The action, he revealed, 'was linked' with approval of the Trans Mountain project. 'So in order to get the national climate change plan — to get Alberta to be part of it, and we need Alberta to be part of it — we agreed to twin an existing pipeline in order to get to work,' he explained."

When you look at it this way, the carbon tax doesn't exist to provide cover for the pipelines. Rather the pipeline provides cover for the carbon tax.

And the timing's all very interesting, given that the carbon tax is now more unpopular than ever such that the government needs an added excuse to ram it through.

Yes, I think so too Seoul.

True Seoul brother. First, a moratorium on export oil tankers along North West coast, without consulting Indians. Kill off all multi billion dollar energy export projects, but one and claim that development and environment go hand in hand. Finally, bring in nonsensical regulations that make pipeline approvals impossible.

It was all about a carbon tax from day one. Prime Minister Gerald Butts had a plan and followed through.

Justin doesn't cate how many good jobs he sends to the US. He doesn't care if he forces people into poverty. He doesn't even care that his carbon tax won't affect climate. He thinks he needs to be virtue signalling to be seen as a climate leader by international progs.

The federal government is said to be already shopping around the pipeline it bought this past Tuesday.

According to the Bloomberg financial news service on Friday, New York investment bankers Greenhill & Co., who had been acting as financial advisers to the Trudeau government on the purchase of Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain pipeline, have already sent out marketing materials to a select group of potential buyers.

People with inside knowledge of the federal Liberals' actions claim sales packages have been sent to other pipeline companies, pension funds and asset managers. Several Indigenous groups have also been approached.

The federal government is said to be confident a buyer can be found before the end of July and that Ottawa can turn a small profit on its investment.

Right. That ain't happening.

How likely do you think it is a private investor can be found in the next six to eight weeks, even though nothing has changed and no private buyer could be found in the past six to eight weeks?

The B.C. government has vowed to be just as obstinate as before and eco-activists are still determined to halt the line "by any means necessary."

So given that building Trans Mountain will be every bit as difficult for its next owner as it was for its previous one, Ottawa would have to sweeten the pot in other ways if it wants to offload this political albatross.

That could mean low, low, LOW pricing. "Yes, here at Honest Justin's used pipelines we have crazy, crazy CRAZY deals during our Summer Madness Sale!"

Or it could mean burdening taxpayers with any losses a new private owner might incur while B.C. and well-funded environmental groups drag out their delaying tactics in court. When Ottawa tried to entice Kinder Morgan to stay in the game by offering to "indemnify" the company against such losses, the price tag for taxpayers was estimated at between $1.5 billion and $2 billion.

But what makes all this insider speculation most ridiculous is the Liberals' assertion that not only can they find a buyer, but they can find one who will give taxpayers a nice little return on investment.

Fat chance. Does anyone other than Prime Minister Selfie truly believe Ottawa can find a buyer where Kinder Morgan could not? And that politicians can negotiate a shrewder deal?

If no one wanted the pipeline last week for $4.5 billion, why would anyone pay $5 billion or $6 billion for it now?

I read it could end up costing the taxpayer fifteen to seventeen billion. More than double the price of $7.4 billion that Kinder Morgan said it would.
