After the War of Northern Aggression, many freed slaves went up North (those already in the North still remained slaves for a while), where they found that Northerners hated blacks. So, a lot of them either went back South where they were treated better, or continued going further North, into Canada.
I've come here to chew bubble gum, and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum.

Montreal has Canada's largest Haitian community. Makes sense since Haitians are francophones.
