Meanwhile, after all this talking about ancient stuff, reminds me of this Japanese manga lol, duno would you be interested but my brother kinda got me into it.

Talks about one day on a very peaceful morning in the middle of summer in Tokyo Japan, a magical portal appeared out of no were that leads to another fantasy world planning to lead an invasion.  Since it's a Japanese manga it's read from the left page to the right.

Quote from: "Odinson"Yeah but the arrow has to get a good hit and go through the roman shield...

But the problem is that they have no problem going through their tower shields, which is just made out of wood and their limbs are exposed, not to mention I believe some Hun arrows are poisonous, at least the ones used by the Hans to fight the Huns were.  It might not kill them in one hit, but at least severely cripple them from fighting onwards.

QuoteAt close range the roman archers start shooting arrows aswell against lightly armoured huns.

That is true, but after fighting for many year against the Hans, especially against their archers, the Huns wouldn't be foolish enough to charge forwards with their cavalry towards a bunch of Legionnaires heavily backed by an army of archers.  Chances are their horse archers will divide into multiple divisions and flank the heck out of the romans at range, simply hit and run tactics from the rear and sides.

QuoteThe romans defeated the hun army in open field.. With the help of the primitive goths and such.

Think that was the only battle they won, but they lost all others...

QuoteIt was only a matter of the romans being able to muster something resembling an army..

At full might, the romans were able to gather 20 legions with ease.. Thats 100k legionnaires.

Most historians and scholars together have agreed that light cavalry is superior to heavy armored cavalry due to the purpose of having a man on a horse, which was for the sake of speed and maneuverability, less alone with a heavy armor soldier on foot.

QuoteIn the battle against Attila, the romans were at a numerical disadvantage.

Romans had no pride at that point.. Rich and lazy fucks whom would rather just pay rather than just take revenge.

All they would have needed was an emperor whom was a warlord at the same time.

I can't say for sure, the Romans during their peak struggled hard to defeat the Germans many times despite having superior technology, while the Huns were by far much more fierce, organized and tactical than any enemies they've fought so far.

Wood or stacked leather shields... They will decrease the arrows momentum significantly..

No longer armour piercing.

The shields were pretty big and heavy.. Thick..

The romans were masters of different formations.. The army will quickly form a diamond formation if flanked.

And the basic roman formation was that they had the center group and two different groups covering the flanks so that they can swallow the enemy if need be..

The germans were bigger than your basic italian... Bigger and more savage men.

I dont know about the light cavalry..

Mounted knights were feared for a thousand years.

It might not penetrate their torso but their limbs would be their Achilles heel, unless you're like some absolutely fearless legendary general I highly doubt the average person can continue fighting onwards with a 1.5" wide broadhead lodged into the flesh of their arm or leg.

If this tactics had worked against the Huns, even their best troops wouldn't have been destroyed by them and end up losing practically every battle.

They might be tough and strong, but known to be very disorganized with little to no tactics, and were on foot unlike the Huns were a whole army of cavalry forces with range weaponry that can penetrate Roman heavy armor in 100 meters.

If we're talking about who fears who, then the Huns were the most terrifying enemy the Romans have ever fought, this is not what historians say but what was mentioned from the Romans themselves.

Historians have concluded what makes cavalry the most effective unit was b/c of their speed, momentum accumulated in attacks and height/gravity advantages against infantry, but with heavy armor makes them slow and vulnerable which defeats it's purpose, not to mention they can't use range weapons due to wearing heavy armor and are forced to melee, while the Huns can out maneuver and out range them in combat.

Still the arrows effectiveness was severely weakened...

Romans had no real troops against the huns.. No real commanders.. The huns were roaming freely.

This is what happens when you ignore all the minor incursions for years.. Soon you´ll have a bunch of barbarians attacking you all at once.

The romans were stretched thin..

The huns might have been lesser problem than they really were.. They were demonized just to make Flavius Aetius´s victory more awesome.

Romans had encountered similar tribes before.

The tactics did work since he huns were destroyed.. Rome crumbled soon after.

The germans were so troublesome because they didnt face the romans in a decisive battle.. They just attacked whenever they pleased..

The arrows were weakened by their shield, but in many battle still states they had their foot pin to the ground and can't move forward, etc.

Lol you're making things up, unless you can quote it for me where they had no real troops or commander, though I agree they're not at their peak, but even at their peak they might not have won due to the lack of cavalry, economic or agricultural supplies to built their army in order to fight against the Huns.

The Huns were never destroyed, the Romans were lucky Attila died and his sons tried to fight over his throne leading to internal conflict and a collpase of their empire.

It was the Romans that tried to invade and concur the Germans but they kept on losing each battle, IIRC it was only the last battle that Rome finally won.
