They look like they are made of paper.

Oxalis is actually a weed, but the purple strain is grown as a house plant because of it's vivid colouration and beauty. Here's one of the more common weeds found in the temperate climate and tropics...

To the layman maybe. The plant physiology is exactly the same. Leaf, flower and seed structure is the same.
