Sandy Denny & The Strawbs - Stay Awhile With Me[/I] (1967)

t seems that loving is a game that I can't win

No sooner are you here than gone again

Is there nothing I can say

To change your mind and stay

Alone with you is all I long to be

Will you stay awhile with me

I've often gazed into my crystal ball

To find out if you think of me at all

But there's no reason why

You should even try

For there's nothing I can give as you can see

If you stay awhile with me

Stay awhile with me

And I will show you I'm true

Stay awhile with me

That's all I'm asking you to do

I see you in the street lamp's rusty gleam

It casts a magic spell as in a dream

The night is growing old

Come in from the cold

I'll lock the door and throw away the key

If you stay awhile with me

The Acid Queen

https://youtu.be/6arYJTUUz_I

If your child ain't all he should be now

This girl will put him right

I'll show him what he could be now

Just give me one night

I'm the gypsy, the acid queen

Pay me before I start

I'm the gypsy and I'm guaranteed

To mend his aching heart

Give us a room, close the door

Leave us for a while

You won't be a boy no more

Young, but not a child

I'm the gypsy, the acid queen

Pay me before I start

I'm the gypsy, I'm guaranteed

To tear your soul apart

Gather your wits and hold them fast

Your mind must learn to roam

Just as the gypsy queen must do

You're gonna hit the road

My work's been done, now look at him

He's never been more alive

His head it shakes, his fingers clutch

Watch his body writhe

I'm the gypsy, the acid queen

Pay...

The Grass Roots remind me a lot of The Hollies. Both bands are very melodic and both are known for their many hit singles and not their albums. I saw the Grass Roots live a number of years after their heyday and thoroughly enjoyed it.  They're one of those bands/artists with enough hits to fill an entire show, i.e., no filler. This is one of my favorites from 1969:

I've seen Creedence Clearwater Revisited twice and John Fogerty twice.  I'd see 'em again, given the opportunity. This is my favorite CCR song. Interestingly, it was the B-side of Proud Mary, which went to #2 on the charts.

I've seen Fogerty live. He never lost his voice.

Although they actually entered the charts five times, ? and The Mysterians are considered to be a "one hit wonder."  From Michigan, in 1966 they made it all the way to numero uno with 96 Tears. And a little bit of trivia - Mel Schacher, bassist and co-founder of Grand Funk Railroad, was with The Mysterians for a short while.

The Five Americans was from Durant, Oklahoma. They had a coupla hits, the biggest of them being Western Union. It peaked at #5 in 1967.  I hadn't listened to it in quite a long time.  Frankly, I'd forgotten just how good it is:

I remember that song!  I haven't heard that in decades.

Thanks, Jeb.

You're welcome, amigo. Looking back when I was a kid, I recall getting The Five Americans confused with Jay & The Americans. Well, I'm no longer confused. Both groups produced some damn fine music.  Here's a dandy from Jay & The Americans you'll probably remember:
