Pretty much most of the former soviet states were corrupt, not that we're in any position to pass comment without addressing the corruption within our own borders. I forsee a time when we are openly behaving exactly like them, assassinations of political opponents is not unknown in America for example, it's only a matter of time before it is being practiced as openly and unapologetically as it is in the one-time soviet states.

Ukraine was very corrupt and still has corruption but less than before.  The EU and US have been helping to decrease corruption and increasing transparency for the last 8 years.  Often it has been two steps forward and one step back (with corrupt people like Joe Biden trying to protect corruption) but they at least have made good progress.  To compare Russia is probably the most corrupt country in Europe now with Belarus being the second.
