My gold coin collection is approaching 30 coins and the entire collection is worth maybe $50,000 US or so? But compared to other collections, that'd be considered rather small.

I jes' buy a coin here, a coin there.

Irony is many rare gold coins can be had for less than many collectibles and antiques now. So, I figger what's a better deal? Something made out of paper or a relatively worthless material....or gold?

In the scheme of things, gold seems like a bargain these days by comparison.

If the economy goes inta the shitter like many are expecting it will one day, what's better? Paper assets with imaginary value or gold?

I just collected coins as a hobby that I started as a project in Grade 7 or so.  I continued to collect into my teens.  My collection is probably about 10x the size of your collection, Joe.

My collection is mainly 17th, 18th, and 19th century coins from Western Europe.  But I also have very rare USA and early Canada coins.  I would estimate my collection to be worth between $450,000 and $600,000.

Like I said, it was just a hobby of mine in high school.

Nothing to brag about.

I only ever had two coins I considered collectible. The first (a 1966 minted Australian round 50 cent piece which was withdrawn the following year because it cost more in silver to mint than the 50 cents it represented) I was given as a membership token to a small community of pot smokers back in my early twenties. The second was a commemorative 2020 American Samoa quarter (the wildlife park one with the bats on it) which I had set in a keyfob. I call it my coronacoin.

I could give a fuck what they were worth on the open market, the only value I place in them is what they represent to me. I'm certainly not looking to expand my "collection" anytime soon either and Joe's insistence in populating this forum with thread after thread of "oooh, shiny" denotes a level of obsession I suspect can only be achieved by wearing the kind of jockettes that strangle one's brain.

Yeah, so what? Do you have any photos?

If you have them, What condition are they in?

Are they even real?

Did you get them certified?

Other than a few Canada issues, Mine are all certified by the NGC, the PGCS and ANACS where they were weighed, assayed, properly photographed and can even be indentified down the last scratch on their websites. Who knows? They've probably been x-rayed too.

BTW, I generally don't buy anything below Mint State (MS 60 and above)

especially coins around the periods you've mentioned, there were a lotta fakes, counterfeiting going on. Heck individual banks and trading companies were even issuing their own currency

I would generally avoid coins from that period unless they have been recently certified by NGC or PGCS.

One coin I bought this year costs me over $3500 USD. A 1913 Canada C Gold sovereign.

Its mintage was 3715 and there are supposed to be around just a few hundred left in existence. In the high grade I bought it at there may be 20 or 30 in existence - in the entire world - aka the 4 corners of the earth. That's almost  Museum/Smithsonian quality. It is a highly desireable item and it is extremely rare. Much more elusive than a Wayne Gretzky Rookie card ($1 million) or a spiderman #1 comic book ($25,000 and up) imho.

In ten years, the coin will probably be worth more than either of Prowler's overpriced heaps of junk. while his are deprciating assets mine is an appreciating one.

While it's possible to always produce a cheap car made out of plastic and composities, this is not the case with a rare antique/coin made outta gold. They were only made in a limited supply so they can only increase in value.

I suppose it's like comparing a camaro with 1957 Corvette, also made in limited quantities. Which one would you choose as a car collector? I'd take the Corvette myself.

They are real, Joe.

I bought them from reputable coin dealers in the 1980's.

I have all the receipts.

I am quite happy that some have increased their value quite dramatically.

I was only interested in these coins as a hobby back in high school.

I did not plan on making so much profit.

I just got lucky.
