Apassenger jet collided with a Black Hawk military helicopter in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The commercial passenger plane had departed from Wichita, Kansas, and was landing on runway 33 at Reagan National Airport before the collision.

"A PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet collided in midair with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter while on approach to Runway 33 at Reagan Washington National Airport around 9 p.m. local time," read the statement from the FAA. "PSA was operating Flight 5342 for American Airlines."

Emergency responders are searching for survivors in the Potomac River. The airport has been shut down, and all planes have been grounded.

An early report said the commercial plane carried between 68 and 70 passengers.

I saw that.  Still no news on how two aircrafts got on the same flight path.

My first instinct is it's the Military helo at fault.  Commercial craft would follow the same charted course every time.

Either the helo jock or the tower fucked up.

I don't know what a helo jock is. But, there was a screw up.

Quote from: formosan on January 30, 2025, 11:23:55 AMI wonder how the helicopter pilot did not see they were heading towards the jet.

A military pilot on Fox this morning stated that night vision reduces your viewing angle to 40% of normal. Coupled with the possibility of not having a fully manned crew could have resulted in gaps of observation.

FAA's diversity push includes focus on hiring people with 'severe intellectual' and 'psychiatric' disabilities

Published January 14, 2024

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is actively recruiting workers who suffer "severe intellectual" disabilities, psychiatric problems and other mental and physical conditions under a diversity and inclusion hiring initiative spelled out on the agency's website.

"Targeted disabilities are those disabilities that the Federal government, as a matter of policy, has identified for special emphasis in recruitment and hiring," the FAA's website states. "They include hearing, vision, missing extremities, partial paralysis, complete paralysis, epilepsy, severe intellectual disability, psychiatric disability and dwarfism."

The initiative is part of the FAA's "Diversity and Inclusion" hiring plan, which says "diversity is integral to achieving FAA's mission of ensuring safe and efficient travel across our nation and beyond." The FAA's website shows the agency's guidelines on diversity hiring were last updated on March 23, 2022.

that's just great.

Are they blaming Trump for this yet?

Brent

There were 60 passengers and four crew members on board Flight 5342. Three service members were aboard the helicopter. All 67 are dead.

Donald Trump responded to the crash just after midnight, suggesting that something about the incident did not compute.

"The airplane was on a perfect and routine line of approach to the airport. The helicopter was going straight at the airplane for an extended period of time. It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were blazing, why didn't the helicopter go up or down, or turn[?]" the president wrote on Truth Social. "Why didn't the control tower tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane[?] This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD!"
