I don't see a contradiction. Its saying out of all the Jews, that 40% of them owned slaves. While out of all the Whites, only .35% owned slaves. It also says that out of all the slave owners, that 78% of them were Jews.

One must remember, that the Jews owned a majority of the slave ships too.

Also, Blacks owned slaves too, some having the biggest plantations. It was also known that the Blacks were some of the ones that treated the slaves the worst. Also, it was a Black man, Anthony Johnson, that made indefinite slavery legal. He also owned White and Black slaves. Originally slavery was meant to last no longer than 7 years per slave, but Anthony went to court, saying a slave was his property, and won in court.

I highly doubt many Irish were slave owners, since they were the first slaves before the Blacks. But I find your question of a total ethnic breakdown to be interesting, and would like to know as well.

Jews were a small minority. Were 78% of all slave owners Jews(an impossibility) or were slightly more Jews than Christians slave owners. That of course would mean small minority of total slave owners were Jews. Obviously the latter is a lot closer to the truth.

But it don't say Christian, it says White vs Jews. Christians were more likely to have big families to help, and not have slaves.

Taking that into account, I too am curious of the demographic breakdown you mentioned. But if we factor that 6% owned slaves, and that White people made up .35% of their demographic, while Jews made up 40% of their demographic, the math starts to add up. I honestly have no idea how many Jews vs Whites were in the country at the time, but I know they wasn't a complete tiny minority. I'd like to know the actual stats though.

Statistically there is not much difference between the two religious groups which is surprising because we know the wealthier a person was the more likely they were to own slaves. Jews, even then tended to be better educated and have higher personal net worths than their Christian counterparts.

Evaluating the share of households that owned slaves in seceding states is "a much more effective means. To break it down about how many U.S. citizens owned slaves is absurd.

If you only focus on who technically owned slaves, though, a better metric would be to evaluate the proportion of slave owners in the 15 states where slavery was still legal in 1860.

About 5% of people in those states were considered slaveholders, the data shows. That's nearly three times higher than the number shared in the meme.

Half of all states were slave owning. So, let's assume half of all Jews lived in slave owning states. That would mean 1277 Jewish-Americans owned 1212 slaves each. And let's assume that half of them were children, that means that Jewish plantations had 2424 slaves each. This is despite stats showing that 88% of plantations had less than 20 slaves and half had less than 5.

As a country we are in fact overly hospitable, treating diseases, giving away food, and caring for them. Being kind and hospitable to the stranger was because of how the Egyptians originally hosted many starving refugees, including the Hebrews. Egypt was able to do this because of Joseph, a Hebrew, stored food in preparation of a famine. Egypt eventually turned these Hebrews into slaves. America doesnt do that and knowing that we give mexcrement thousands of dollars on top of the food, clothing, and free medical care, I'd say we go above and beyond, not to mention how we give their home countries tons of money too! I disagree, as there was states that had slaves that didn't secede. NY for example, was one of the biggest slave owning states. You cant just go by the ones that seceded.

6% is indeed closer.

The meme was stating how many Jews, and how many Whites owned slaves.

The sources were posted at the bottom of the meme, one was the US Census of 1860.

I only know it was roughly 6%, I knew all races owned slaves, but I had never saw it split up like that before with the amount Jews vs Whites had.
