They had a one hit wonder weekend last month on a nearby radio station. That would make a good thread.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?  Well, in this case the question is - Which came first, the song or the band?  And the answer is that the song came first. Geoff Stephens wanted to record a novelty song he wrote, so he did just that with some studio musicians. Well, in 1966 the song became a huge hit in the U.K. and actually reached #1 in the USA.  Thus, The New Vaudeville Band was put together to ride that cash cow and the rest is history:

Released in 1969, this is another which-came-first-the-chicken-or-the-egg songs. The long and short of it is that this song started climbing the charts, so a band had to be slapped together to seize the opportunity.  And I must add that it is a purdy dang good song:

More memories of Rick Derringer, who just passed away. Formed 1962 in Fort Recovery, OH, they were originally called Rick and the Raiders.  By the time this classic tune hit the airwaves, however, they had become The McCoys.  This tune is also now the official rock song of Ohio:

Formed in 1963, Herman's Hermits were a huge part of the British Invasion in the mid 60's.  They had a slew of hits. This one made it to #2 in 1965:

So that is the music Herman wrote before he recorded this song.

I'd be lyin' if I said Strawberry Alarm Clock appeared on any of my playlists. But, they did make an unforgettable contribution to music that triggers memories for me. It should be noted that SAC was formed in 1967 and promptly had a #1 hit the same year. I should also note that Ed King, who later joined Lynyrd Skynyrd and became one of my all-time favorite guitar pickers, was a member of SAC. You can catch glimpses of a very young Ed in this video:

Formed in 1958 in Jacksonville, Florida, the Classics IV had a nice run of soft rock hits in the late 60s.  The front man was Dennis Yost, who, sadly, passed in 2008.  This song is probably my favorite, having made it all the way to #3 in 1968. I expect Priscilla will really like it, too:
