A widely used sugar substitute found in some sugar-free and low-calorie foods may not be as benign as previously thought, according to a new study.

Small amounts of erythritol, which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001, may damage brain blood vessel cells and could lead to a higher chance of stroke, researchers from the University of Colorado said in a news release.

Erythritol is considered a sugar alcohol, produced mostly by fermenting corn. It's found in a large number of products such as candy, sugar-free gum, soft drinks, mouthwash, ice cream, protein bars, and more.

Alabama police have arrested seven people so far in a terrifying child sex trafficking ring that involved an underground bunker in the small town of Brent.

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office said they opened an investigation into concerns about possible sex abuse on Feb. 4. Four months later, they announced arrests and unbelievable details about what they uncovered.

Initially, police announced four arrests on Saturday related to investigation into the bunker and said that at least six children had been drugged and raped, according to Assistant District Attorney Bryan Jones. The storm shelter was being used as an underground bunker.

The four men arrested were identified as William Chase McElroy, Dalton Terrell, Andres Trejo-Velazquez, and Timothy St. John. Some of the suspects had allegedly confessed to their crimes, according to Jones.

Social Security will have to be means tested to keep it from insolvency.

It was smart of the Trump admionistration cut scammers off.

Social Security recipients face a 24 percent cut to their monthly payments in less than a decade as the trust fund dries up, according to a new analysis from the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB).

The Social Security and Medicare trust funds, the group said, are just more than seven years from insolvency, with the group citing projections from the two programs' trustees.

For Social Security, the group projected that retirees could see a benefit cut of 24 percent in late 2032 unless Congress acts, according to the CRFB, a think tank that describes itself as nonpartisan.

"We estimate that this would be equal to an $18,100 annual benefit cut for a dual-earning couple retiring at the start of 2033," the CRFB said, saying it would occur "shortly after" the Social Security trust fund goes insolvent. In contrast, a single-income couple at that income level would see a $13,600 annual benefit cut.

This is probably before accounting for the savings from DOGE.

I believe SS and Medicare are on a firmer footing now than they have been for a long time.

For decades, statins have been heralded as reliable heroes in the battle against heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States and globally. However, an expert review suggests that long-term use of statins may be aiding the enemy by accelerating coronary artery calcification instead of providing protection.

The review, published in Clinical Pharmacology, suggests that statins may act as "mitochondrial toxins," impairing muscle function in the heart and blood vessels by depleting coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), an antioxidant cells use for growth and maintenance. Multiple studies show that statins inhibit CoQ10 synthesis, leading many patients to supplement.

CoQ10 is vital for producing ATP, the cell's fundamental energy carrier. Insufficient CoQ10 inhibits ATP production, resulting in an energy deficit that the review authors say "could be a major cause for heart muscle and coronary artery damage."

"We believe that many years of statin drug therapy result in the gradual accumulation of mitochondrial DNA damage," the authors wrote.

Authorities in Michigan say a man entered a Walmart in Traverse City on Saturday afternoon armed with a folding knife and stabbed 11 people before being taken into custody.

The attack began unfolding at 4:43 p.m., the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office said in a statement posted online.

The victims were being treated at the Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. As of Saturday evening, six of the victims were in critical condition and five were in serious condition, the hospital said in an update online.

At a news conference Saturday evening, Grand Traverse Sheriff Michael Shea said the victims include six males and five females. Authorities have not yet provided the ages of any of the victims.

The suspect has been identified by authorities only as a 42-year-old man.

"We believe he acted alone at this time," Shea said during the news conference. "There is no information indicating there were additional suspects."

The sheriff said a deputy arrived at the Walmart within 3 minutes of a 911 call being made about the stabbing and took the suspect into custody. The sheriff also credited "citizen involvement" with apprehending the suspect, who was armed with a folding knife, he said.
