 According to NBC News, the person of interest named earlier Sunday in connection with the deadly shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, will be released shortly.

Police initially said they were confident the person of interest was the individual who opened fire in a first-floor classroom at Brown's Barus & Holley building Saturday before fleeing, the news network reported. But authorities now say evidence "now points in a different direction," Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha noted Sunday night, according to NBC News.

"I think it's fair to say that there is no basis to consider him a person of interest, so that's why he's being released," Neronha told reporters, according to the news network.

UPDATE: 6:13 p.m. ET: The person of interest in connection with the deadly Brown University shooting is 24-year-old Benjamin Erickson, NBC News said, citing three senior law enforcement officials who were briefed on the investigation.

Erickson was an Army infantryman from May 2021 to November 2024, the news network said, citing Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Ruth Castro, who added that "he has no deployments and left the Army in the rank of specialist."

One Democrat-led city's housing plan is facing scrutiny from the Trump administration's Department of Housing and Urban Development.

On Thursday, HUD announced that it had opened an investigation into Boston's "race-based" housing program, claiming that the city's diversity, equity, and inclusion practices may "violate civil rights protections under the Fair Housing Act and Title VI."

HUD sent a letter to Boston's Office of Housing in mid-September, stating that the department had reason to believe the city was using federal grants to support a race-based housing plan.
