Dutch police launch manhunt after 'multiple' people shot, 1 killed in Utrecht tram attack

One person was killed and "multiple" people were wounded in a shooting on a tram in the Dutch city of Utrecht, police said Monday.



They're considering a possible "terrorist motive" and have launched a manhunt as they investigate reports of other shootings.



The Dutch anti-terror co-ordinator raised the threat alert in Utrecht province to its highest level after someone opened fire on the tram around 10:45 a.m. local time on Monday.



An anti-terrorism unit was sent to the scene, and according to police, anti-terror co-ordinatorPieter-JaapAalbersberg said investigators were considering the possibility there was a "terrorist motive."



"The culprit is still on the run. A terror motive cannot be excluded," he said in a Twitter message.



Dutch police said they were looking for a least one person who might have fled by car. Spokesperson Bernhard Jens did not rule out that more people might be involved.



Utrecht police cordoned off the 24 October Square tram station, located in a residential neighbourhood outside the city centre, while emergency services rushed to the scene.



Helicopters were dispatched to airlift victims to hospital and police were appealing to the public to stay away to allow first responders to do their work.



Police instructed schools in the city to keep their doors closed.



Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte called the situation "very worrying," and the counterterror co-ordinator said he was holding a "crisis" meeting.

Police in Utrecht say they are reducing to five the number of people who were injured in a deadly shooting on a tram in the Dutch city.



Earlier, police said nine people had been wounded in the shooting on Monday.



The death toll of three in the shooting has not changed.



Dutch police announced the updated number of wounded in a tweet but did not immediately give a reason for changing the number.



Heavily armed police are now in a manhunt in the central Dutch city, searching for the suspect.
