https://globalnews.ca/news/7561871/medicago-covid19-vaccine-tobacco/amp/">Canada's own Medicago VLP vaccine candidate uses fast growing plants & is now ready for stage 3 testing

Under a winter's snow cover on the outskirts of Quebec City, a high-tech greenhouse, set at a balmy 23 C, is growing row after row of a weed that could help end the coronavirus pandemic.

It's called Nicotiana benthamiana, a relative of the tobacco plant, native to Australia, and it is a key to biopharmaceutical company Medicago's COVID-19 vaccine.

Medicago is the leading Canadian-based contender to produce a vaccine, with an agreement to provide the federal government with 76 million doses if approved for use.

In phase one of its clinical trials, 100 per cent of people who received its COVID-19 vaccine developed significant antibody responses with no severe adverse effects.

Phase two clinical trials are currently wrapping up and phase three is expected to begin later this month. It will involve 30,000 people in 11 countries — including Canada — and will ultimately determine if the vaccine protects people from COVID-19. The vaccine requires two doses, 21 days apart, and if approved by Health Canada, could be in the arms of Canadians by the second half of this year.

This is the first I have heard of this candidate. There was one from Saskatchewan, but I cannot remember the name of it.

LOL .. maybe mod would clean up the result of  Seoul's excitement ^^  ac_smile

They will have to use a manufacturing plant in the US

For years, he explained, Medicago had been asking the federal government for funds to assist with pandemic preparedness and to develop a manufacturing plant at home.

"Everybody's saying this is a wonderful idea, it's a made-in-Canada solution and then crickets. Nothing."

It wasn't till Covid hit that the Govt put up the money needed

Canada has first dibs on  76 million doses of Medicago's vaccine, should it be approved by Health Canada

Promising pre-clinical results for USask VIDO-InterVac COVID-19 vaccine

A COVID-19 vaccine candidate developed by the University of Saskatchewan's (USask) Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization-International Vaccine Centre (VIDO-InterVac) has cleared another major milestone in moving towards human clinical trials: the novel vaccine has proven highly effective in ferrets, one of the commonly used animal models for COVID-19.

Ontario's cabinet is being urged to declare another state of emergency as it seeks to address surging numbers of COVID-19 cases in the province, sources say.

Health officials have recommended the following restrictions to cabinet, sources told CBC Toronto Monday:

Gathering limits reduced to as few as five people.

Shorter hours for essential businesses, which would involve earlier closures and later openings.

Limits on construction activity, but those limits would still allow essential construction to continue. Essential construction would be defined as work on health care and critical infrastructure, as well as residential buildings.

A requirement that no employees would be allowed in offices unless they are deemed essential.

Those proposals, which have not yet been decided upon, come as Ontario reported another 3,338 cases of COVID-19 and the province's death toll topped 5,000 on Monday.

Alberta reported Monday 639 new cases of COVID-19 and 23 additional deaths.

Paramedics and emergency responders are now eligible to receive the vaccine, Premier Jason Kenney announced Monday. He said the province hopes to administer 50,000 doses per week by the end of January and 200,000 per week by the end of March.
