If Trump imposes tariffs on Canada, it was Trudeau's choice

Trump's position is fluid and impulsive.

But, believe it or not, the situation is worse here in Canada.

The Liberal party is holding the federal government and, indeed, the entire country hostage while it indulges in choosing a new leader.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau could have — should have — gotten out of the way much sooner, but he waited until the worst possible moment to resign. (when our economy is vulnerable to every sneeze and hiccup in Washington, D.C.)

Then he chose to leave.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford, head of the premiers' conference, is busy grandstanding and seemingly unaware most of the domestic oil consumed in Ontario and Quebec comes through a pipeline that crosses through North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, which means it could be shut down by Americans if Canada decides (as Ford has proposed) to get tough and embargo oil to the U.S.

hen there's the little fact that while Canada is the source of 60% of oil imported by the U.S., there is no guarantee it will stay that way. If we act tough, other countries would be more than happy to fill the void and Canada might never recover its market share.

But if, in the chaos created by Liberal self-indulgence, Canada ends up starting a trade war by talking tough, the damage to our economy could last a decade.

An election cannot come soon enough.

Are the tariffs in effect? I can't seem to find a clear answer.

The Trump administration believes they can use tariffs to charge other countries for costs such as defence spending, which for decades Canada and many European countries in NATO have been laggards on.

I have decided I am only going to put a 10% tariff on Canadian oil.

On Saturday, Trump's pick for Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnick, called Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to tell him the news about the tariffs and to warn against retaliation. Basically, if Canada retaliates to the American 25% tariffs we will see an even higher rate within the week.

"This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!" Trump said in a statement.

Except he hasn't left. So our government is currently headed by the lamest of lame ducks. Even an interim prime minister would be listened to better than the soon-to-be-insignificant Justin Trudeau.

Mexico has managed to avoid U.S. tariffs — for now — after its president came to a last-minute agreement with President Trump.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, in a post on X, said she spoke to the American leader Monday morning and that they came to an accord that delays for at least a month Trump's threat of 25% tariffs on all Mexican goods imported to the United States.

In exchange, she said Mexico had agreed to reinforce its northern border with 10,000 members of its national guard in order to combat migration and the trafficking of illegal drugs.

It's symbolic. Doug Ford is in the middle of an election campaign.

If the Liberals remain in power, that is a distinct possibility.
