For the record, the highest minimum wage in Canada is currently $12.50 in Northwest Territories.

Keep in mind that minimum wage is generally REACTIVE to inflation.

Fine by me. We' re already seeing this take place in the US. Convenience/fast food places like Sheetz, and QuickCheck are already doing it. It's only a matter of time before the other minimum wage job providers who can access this technology, follow suit. From what I can see, it deletes at least 3 to 4 unskilled employees from the workforce for each location. And best of all, your order is less likely to get fucked up and if it does, odds are it's probably your fault.  ac_biggrin

It's a win-win all the way around.

NDP was paying some Punjabi phone canvassers $13 (four bucks less than their English counterparts)

Low wages is  really a sad scenario no matter how one slices it .. with no solution

Low wages keep the poor poor, but when a law takes it up 2 things happen to make things even worse for them

1. Owners of certain type of businesses where wages are low often cannot survive = Automation

and / or

2. Owners of certain type of businesses where wages are low often cannot survive = let some workers go and push the remainder harder to compensate

I don't have the answer, I just hate the reality

Automation creates a whole different set of jobs that are a hell of a lot more expensive than minimum wage ones.

A few techies?

Oh, and 3. Many businesses close - many poor lose their jobs

So, if I have it right, if we raise it too much, many of the poor lose jobs to 1, 2 and 3.

All I'm saying is that it is a conundrum. There is no answer to having decent paying  and plentiful jobs for the poor.

I do not like it, but it is the reality - and I have no answers as to how to get good lots of paying jobs for the poor

Like it or not, it's they way it's going to go. It's more convenient for the customer and more cost effective for the business owner. Paying someone $15 or even $10 an hour to do what the customer can do for his or her self is rapidly become obsolete.

Bricktop

What HE said.

Advances in digital kiosks and robotics will continue to erode counter staff jobs...and restaurant waiters as well.

We are inventing ourselves out of employment, so that corporations can make MORE profit. Then, the fat cats will sit in their boardrooms and wonder where the profits went when no-one has a job.

Fucking morons.

When no one can afford anything then we'll past the rich on the back?

This argument always bugs me.  Business doesn't want to pay people a liveable wage, a non-poverty inducing wage, or hell nothing at all but want people to buy their products and use their services.  What I have always wondered is if these businesses realise these employees are also consumers.

Honestly Shen, every time you play this card I wonder if you have taken the time to really think about the bigger economic cycle.  I wonder if you have any clue just how bad poverty really is on a society.  I wonder if you realise that every time your beloved bankers or politicians or dicks with MBAs fuck up its the little guys who get shafted.  I'd like to see you give it some serious thought before you launch into yet another one of these fucking threads.

That's all true. Still, it does not present a solution. Sadly, there may not be one as I suggested above
