My Grandfather possibly watched over him...he was in the British Army. He also patrolled the coast of Western Australia guarding the Aussies from the Japanese. His ship alternated between SA & WA. After the war he falsified his passport and remained in SA. Many of the lads did.



All that aside...I'm sure your Grandfather enjoyed Cape Town, indeed a great and special part of Southern Africa.

Could have.  You know, my Grandfather never really did complain about the conditions there...  Sure, he didn't want to be there, but it wasn't that bad!



He was young, but you'd apply for a job there just like today!  Bring in a resume.  He was hired as a cook.



Times were tough, and if you smoked, you'd save your butts you re-roll them...  Not living on cloud nine, but not that bad.



Back then, the Negroes knew their place in town, so they weren't a concern it seems.



After the war ended, he decided to come to Canada for some odd reason...  And here I am.  First gen, since my parents came here also as kids.

My Grandfather had no animosity towards the Germans themselves. In fact his eldest daughter, my aunt, married a young German that was visiting from Berlin. They are still married to this day. He is a great man.

In my opinion war isn't really always a good thing.  It does disrupt a lot of people from just living a normal life.

War is war. If one were to opposite their country's interests, fear of retribution and being labeled a traitor would often sway one's point of view. My uncle knew his country well. Although he was only a child during the war, when I asked him if the men really had a choice, he simply stated that nobody had a choice and to oppose meant risking being shot.
