Well if not create a vaccine, at least we could have set up production facilities to produce any of the major vaccines on contract

Again, nada ... now they are scrambling and at the mercy of others

Here's another article from CTV this morning

https://server4.kproxy.com/servlet/redirect.srv/sruj/shhzdcy/s4iwolzo/p2/servlet/redirect.srv/sfi/safoyhgq/smno/p2/health/coronavirus/we-took-our-eye-off-the-ball-how-canada-lost-its-vaccine-production-capacity-1.5204040">'We took our eye off the ball': How Canada lost its vaccine production capacity

With some promising COVID-19 vaccines in the pipeline, several countries are ramping up production of their life-saving candidates. But Canada remains on the sidelines, despite having a history as one of the world's leading vaccine producers.

Laboratories in Toronto and Montreal once produced groundbreaking shots for polio, diphtheria, and tuberculosis, among others. But poor business models and privatization programs eventually led to those companies being sold off to foreign multinational pharmaceutical companies. Today, even if a Canadian vaccine candidate is proven effective, the companies developing them lack the means to produce them here.

"That's a major glitch," said Earl Brown, an infectious disease expert and a former member of the H1N1 vaccine task group in Canada. "You're going to have to get a partner, somebody who's got the ability to do that and then you have to get them onside, tuned up, send them your vaccine, get it produced and bottled. Not the best way to do it."

More in the link about our past great drug production

What is wrong with this country. We were world leaders in medicine, manufacturing, and resource production. Thanks to liberal globalists we are dependent on other countries for vaccines, medical supplies, and petroleum.

TRUE!!

Speaking for medicine alone, we were once a world leader in both inventing new medicines and producing them en masse for other countries

The Connaught Labs were the backbone. It and Canada were respected as major leaders around the world

Even after being dependent on another country for our emergency medical supplies, the federal government seems happy with this dangerous place we're in.

https://torontosun.com/opinion/columnists/lilley-trudeaus-vaccine-boast-still-means-canadians-will-have-a-long-wait">LILLEY: Trudeau's vaccine boast still means Canadians will have a long wait

To listen to Justin Trudeau in the House of Commons the last few days, you would think Donald Trump was our prime minister responding to questions about Canada's vaccine plan.

Apparently, we have the biggest plan and the best plan, just turns out it will also be a late plan.

In Britain, they are already booking appointments to give priority patients access to the vaccine, the United States is looking at a Dec. 12 rollout and our PM is sputtering about how many vaccines we will get whenever we do actually get them.

"Over the past months, experts have worked with this government to put Canadians in the very best possible position on vaccines. We now have the best, most diverse portfolio of vaccines anywhere in the world," Trudeau boasted without being able to give details.

Those details are important because Canada was late to the COVID-19 vaccine sweepstakes. While other countries signed deals early, Canada, under Trudeau dithered

"To the nearest 100 million, can the Prime Minister tell the House how many vaccines will be delivered to the rest of the world before a delivery is made to Canada?" O'Toole asked.

It's not a flippant question; this is a real issue for Canada.

We could actually face two delays: one from being at the back of the line in terms of countries who signed agreements to buy the vaccines and the other from Health Canada delaying approval. While other countries with similar health systems and approval methods gave the green light to rapid tests in the spring, those were not approved by Health Canada until the fall.

Meanwhile, Trudeau and the Liberals are trying to put blame for the lack of vaccine capacity at the feet of the Harper Conservatives, the people in power until late 2015, or five years ago.

Trudeau thinks he can blame actions half a decade ago or more for his failings as he claims the country has no vaccine capacity.

First off, the Harper government maintained standing agreements with producers GSK of Quebec City and Sanofi Pasteur of Toronto to produce vaccines in the event of a pandemic. These contracts served Canada well during H1N1 and were renewed for 10 years in March 2011, meaning they are still in effect.

Trump's private/public partnership in Operation Warp Speed was the kind of swift leadership countries expect. Trudeau procrastinated, patted himself on the back and blamed his poor leadership on the previous government.

I just spotted this today in Quebec's daily report while recording stats from Quebec

"VACCINATIONS COMING ... Premier Francois Legault said the province hopes to have a vaccine ready for deployment by January.

"With the vaccination, there is hope, but the battle is not over," he said.

Legault added that Quebec is waiting on Ottawa to determine the number of vaccinations the province will get.

Once they are ready, vaccinations will be administered by priority with CHSLD workers and older people at the front of the queue. "

I certainly hope that happens. But, if I was a health care worker in Quebec, I wouldn't hold my breath.

I read that the first round of vaccinations in the US could begin December 12..

It will be later in Canada, but how much later, is anybody's guess.

Canada could approve 1st coronavirus vaccine by end of 2020

The chief medical adviser at Health Canada says Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine candidate could be approved in Canada next month.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is meeting Dec. 10 to consider whether to give the go-ahead to Pfizer.

Deputy chief public health officer Dr. Howard Njoo also said Thursday that Canada is in a good position to provide coronavirus vaccine access to "every Canadian who wants one" in 2021, but many will have to wait while initial supplies roll out.

That initial rollout — which will likely see three million priority Canadians get their shots first — will focus on three core groups: those at the highest risk of contracting COVID-19, those at high risk of transmitting it to vulnerable people and essential workers.

"As things stand now, we expect certain vaccines to become available in early 2021. However, it's important to note that the initial supply of these vaccines will be limited ... When a vaccine is ready, Canada will be ready."

However, the specifics of a rollout schedule remain unclear and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged earlier in the week that Canadians will receive the vaccine after citizens of countries like the U.S. and the U.K., where some of the leading vaccine candidates manufacture their supplies.

None of the leading vaccine candidates have manufacturing facilities in Canada

Still, the government has said the anticipation is that initial supplies of vaccines could arrive between January and March 2021, and go to those at the highest risk first.

Essential workers and those at high risk of transmitting the virus to high-risk individuals will likely include individuals like long-term care home workers, healthcare workers, police, firefighters and others "essential to maintaining the pandemic response."

Ottawa keeps changing things. Bad enough they blew procurement, but appears they have no formal organized plan even now

Yesterday that put out a different plan

Even though they have let their people down badly, sadly, lib stalwarts will still vote for them next go round

Our provincial government is getting blamed for everything, even though they have did what they could, including procuring medical supplies and giving extras to other provinces..

But, the only government in Canada that has fumbled the COVID response is the one that gets a pass, and that is Ottawa.

OTTAWA -- The first COVID-19 vaccine approval from Health Canada could come before Christmas, the agency's chief medical adviser announced on Thursday.

Dr. Supriya Sharma said that the review of Pfizer's vaccine candidate—which is one of three currently being assessed for safety by Health Canada—is the most advanced, and the agency is expecting to approve it for use in Canada along the same pre-Christmas timeline as the American and European health agencies.

Both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency have said they are looking at December approvals for the vaccine candidate made in partnership with BioNTech, which was the first out of the gate to report preliminary positive results and an over 90 per cent effectiveness.
