Beijing Sanctions US Defense Manufacturers Over Arms Sales to Taiwan

The Chinese regime will impose unspecified sanctions on Lockheed Martin, Boeing Defense, Raytheon, and other U.S. companies it says are involved in Washington's arms sales to Taiwan.

China's foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said on Oct.  26 the move was to protect the regime's national interests, but did not specify what form the sanctions would take.

The move comes after the U.S. State Department approved an arms sale to Taiwan that could have a total value of $1.8 billion, the Pentagon said last week. The proposed sale has been submitted to Congress for final review, where it is unlikely to be opposed.

The package includes 135 SLAM-ERs—a type of advanced air-launched cruise missile—made by Boeing; Himars mobile artillery rocket systems by Lockheed Martin; and surveillance and reconnaissance sensors by Raytheon, to be mounted on aircraft.

Beijing has previously imposed sanctions on U.S. companies for selling weapons to Taiwan, but no details were provided on the nature of the penalties. Most recently in July, it placed unspecified sanctions on Lockheed Martin for being involved in a $620 million sale of Patriot surface-to-air missiles to Taiwan.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) issued a 7,000-plus-word bulletin upon the conclusion of its most important political meeting of the year, in which it emphasized leader Xi Jinping's "core" role and hinted at the enormity of China's economic woes.

Known as the fifth plenary session, top Party officials convened to map out the country's economic development, drafting a five-year plan and a new 15-year plan called Vision 2035.

The bulletin issued on Oct. 29 stated that Xi was "the core of the Party" and "takes the helm," while noting the economic challenges ahead.

"We will surely be able to overcome the various difficulties and obstacles that appear on the road ahead, and we will surely be able to push forward into a new era of 'socialism with Chinese characteristics,'" the bulletin states.

Beijing Using Political Warfare to Subvert Free Societies Worldwide, State Department Official Warns

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is deploying political warfare to covertly influence free societies around the world, a top State Department official has warned.

The regime "wants control, or at least veto power, over public discourse and political decisions the world over," said David Stilwell, assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, at a virtual discussion hosted by Stanford's Hoover Institution on Oct. 30.

It accomplishes that through a wide array of malign activities that are "covert, coercive, and corrupting," he said. These activities are dubbed by the CCP as "United Front Work" but better understood in the West as political warfare, Stilwell said.

United Front Work, described by Party leaders as a "magic weapon," involves the efforts of thousands of overseas groups that carry out political influence operations, suppress dissident movements, gather intelligence, and facilitate the transfer of technology to China. These groups are coordinated by the Party agency the United Front Work Department (UFWD).

While some United Front organizations publicly state their affiliation with Beijing, "most try to present themselves as independent, grassroots-type NGOs, cultural-exchange forums, 'friendship' associations, chambers of commerce, media outlets, or academic groups," Stilwell said.

A recent investigation by Newsweek found about 600 such groups in the United States. Stilwell said the groups include Beijing-backed Confucius Institutes that sit on dozens of American college campuses, Chinese students and scholars associations, private Chinese companies, and other groups working to co-opt state and local governments.

"All told, we face a large and deliberately opaque amalgam of Chinese Communist Party officials, agents, and cutouts seeking advantage in our societies," he said.

This year, the Trump administration has designated a range of CCP-controlled bodies as foreign missions of China in recognition of their roles doing Beijing's bidding in the United States. Most recently, the State Department designated a United Front group, the National Association for China's Peaceful Unification, as a foreign mission. The Confucius Institute U.S. Center and 15 state-controlled media outlets have also been designated.

The Justice Department, meanwhile, has also cracked down on a range of malign actions sanctioned by the CCP, from intellectual property theft to spying. In September, an NYPD officer named Baimadajie Angwang was arrested, and accused of spying for the regime. Prosecutors alleged Angwang fed intelligence about the local Tibetan community to his handler at the Chinese consulate who was assigned to the UFWD division called the China Association for Preservation and Development of Tibetan Culture.

Trump Issues Order to End Investments in Chinese Military Companies

WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump on Nov. 12 issued an executive order to stop investments in Chinese companies that are tied to China's military, citing threats to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States.

The Chinese Communist Party, through its aggressive national strategy called "Military-Civil Fusion," uses Chinese companies to strengthen the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

"At the same time, those companies raise capital by selling securities to United States investors that trade on public exchanges both here and abroad," the order reads.

The Department of Defense this year designated 31 Chinese firms as Chinese military companies operating directly or indirectly in the United States, including those owned or controlled by the PLA.

Many of these companies are publicly traded on stock exchanges around the world, and millions of U.S. investors, through their pension funds, are unwittingly transferring wealth from the United States to these entities.

The Pentagon's list includes companies such as Aviation Industry Corp. of China, Huawei, and Hangzhou Hikvision.

Two of the companies on the list, China National Chemical Corp. (ChemChina) and China Three Gorges Corp. (CTG), for example, had raised a combined $3.4 billion in U.S. dollar-denominated bond offerings in September, according to a report by RWR Advisory, a Washington-based research and risk consultancy.

Programming Alert: 'Reject,' a New Film Exploring the Consequences of a Business Deal With China

It is estimated that the cost of IP (intellectual property) theft of U.S. trade secrets by China is $250 billion to $600 billion annually. But how does it impact the lives of people who have been through this type of experience? That's the main question posed by "Reject," the latest film from writer and director David Chai.

The film follows Peter (played by Connor Hough), a typical American businessman who is enamored with the idea of expanding his business into China and accessing the billion-plus population of the Chinese market. He makes a deal with a firm connected to the Chinese regime but discovers that things don't work out quite how he imagined.

Produced by Compassion Entertainment, this cautionary tale is important viewing for everyone curious about how IP theft works and how devastating it can be. The two leads, Connor Hough and Tayler Karin, were picked out of hundreds of hopefuls to be in the film. The supporting cast includes Tom Procida, Arthur Axis, and Julie Joy Shin.

Part of Trump's goal is to "make it politically untenable for the Biden administration to change course" on the policies "as China acts aggressively from India to Hong Kong to Taiwan, and the pandemic triggers a second global wave of shutdowns," Axios reported.

National Security Council spokesperson John Ullyot told Axios: "Unless Beijing reverses course and becomes a responsible player on the global stage, future U.S. presidents will find it politically suicidal to reverse President Trump's historic actions."

The administration plans to take additional actions against Chinese companies and government entities for a variety of human rights violations and matters involving U.S. national security. The report said to watch out for Director of National Intelligence (DNI) John Ratcliffe to explain China's criminal activity inside the U.S. to the American public in the near future.

DNI senior adviser Cliff Sims said, "Director Ratcliffe will continue playing a leading role, in coordination with other national security principals, in delivering a necessary mindset shift from the Cold War and post-9/11 counterterrorism eras to a focus on great power competition with an adversarial China."

The report comes as Trump has said for months that he would be cracking down on China for a variety of issues, nearly all of which have been magnified by the coronavirus pandemic that originated in Wuhan, China. The Washington Post reported in April that senior U.S. officials were laying out plans for taking retaliatory actions against China for the pandemic.

Throughout the year, top U.S. officials have given speeches outlining the threats posed to the United States by communist China. The officials include Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Attorney General William Barr, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien.

In late May, Trump gave a statement in the Rose Garden about the United States' relationship with China.

China's pattern of misconduct is well known. For decades, they have ripped off the United States like no one has ever done before. Hundreds of billions of dollars a year were lost dealing with China, especially over the years during the prior administration. China raided our factories, offshored our jobs, gutted our industries, stole our intellectual property, and violated their commitments under the World Trade Organization. To make matters worse, they are considered a developing nation getting all sorts of benefits that others, including the United States, are not entitled to.

But I never solely blamed China for this. They were able to get away with a theft like no one was able to get away with before because of past politicians and, frankly, past presidents. But unlike those who came before, my administration negotiated and fought for what was right. It's called: fair and reciprocal treatment.
