Military personnel sent to nursing homes in Ontario have observed shocking conditions, including "blatant disregard" for infection control measures, mistreatment of residents and a level of care described as "horrible," according to documents obtained by Global News.

Canadian Armed Forces teams deployed to five of the province's worst-hit long-term care homes to help control COVID-19 have raised concerns about each of the facilities, describing the care as ranging from below best practices to "borderline abusive, if not abusive" and worse, the documents show.

Infection prevention and control measures were found to be a particular problem, with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) protocols going unheeded by staff, many of whom were not properly trained, according to the documents obtained from a source familiar with the mission.

A cpl of examples of what the military reported

Staff at a Brampton nursing home allegedly recorded a Taylor Swift Dance Video showing them dancing through the facility, passing between areas deemed COVID-19 positive and negative without wearing any protective equipment, the documents claimed.

At a facility in Etobicoke that has experienced dozens of coronavirus deaths, residents who tested positive for COVID-19 shared rooms with uninfected residents, separated only by a curtain, the documents said.

It gets a lot worse .. a lot more degrading

Obviously they knew things were very bad - which is why military teams were sent in - they just didn't know how bad

Military,s Report just released May 26, 2020 4:58PM EDT

'Gut-wrenching' military report sheds light on grim conditions in Ontario nursing homes

A military report released Tuesday shed light on the "gut-wrenching" conditions of five long-term care homes in Ontario during the COVID-19 pandemic.

TORONTO -- A military report released Tuesday shed light on the "gut-wrenching" conditions of five long-term care homes in Ontario during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) report, written by Brigadier-General C.J.J. Mialkowski, outlines the grim state inside the facilities, claiming not only that there were staffing shortages and lack of personal protective equipment (PPE), but also that there were bug infestations, old food trays stacked inside resident rooms and that patients were observed "crying for help with staff not responding."

Based on two weeks of observation, the CAF said they identified a number of medical, professional and technical issues at all five long-term care homes.

Among them were significant allegations claiming that staff used the same PPE—gloves, masks and gowns—while treating multiple patients. In at least one of the homes, the CAF said that patients who were COVID-19 positive were allowed to wander through the facility.

Military members said they witnessed residents "crying out for help" while waiting anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours for a staff member to respond.

The report also claims that some residents were force fed to the point where audible choking could be heard.

In two of the homes, military members reported seeing bug infestations, including ants, cockroaches and flies.

CAF reported that there was a "general culture of fear" among staff in terms of using supplies "because they cost money" and that key supplies were often locked away and not accessible. They also said that residents who routinely soil themselves were not allowed an extra soaker pad or towel to protect their sheets. The report goes on to say that "PSWs are afraid for their jobs on this issue."

The report also cites "aggressive behaviour" that military members described as "abusive/inappropriate."

"Examples include aggressiveness when changing incontinence products, not stopping or slowing when resident complained of pain, pulling residents, aggressive transfers impacting resident ability to participate in care as able (roll self in bed,) degrading or inappropriate comments directed at residents ect."

-------

 Other allegations include:

Reusing hypodermoclysis supplies "even after sterility has been obviously compromised"

Inadequate dosing intervals for some medications

CAF reported nearly a dozen incidents of "bleeding fungal infections" due to poor peri-catheterization car

The facility is understaffed during the day and new staff haven't been trained or oriented

It took a pandemic to see that some nursing homes are not providing the kind of protections needed by vulnerable people.

Sad isn't it. Does not say much for our leaders nor for their layers of underlings .. any one layer could have spotted the problems

I'm sure it's happening in Alberta too.

The elder care system is flawed in all western countries..

There is very little supervision.. Old people get treated like shit while the elder care operator charges 20 bucks for toilet paper roll change..

Elderly people have been cooped up inside for months.. They cannot complain due to memory illness.

These facilities are designed to milk the patients bank account dry.

The prices are higher than in the Paris ritz.
