The province is investigating reports of health-care staff playing a racist game betting on the blood alcohol level of mainly Indigenous patients they were treating, according to Health Minister Adrian Dix.

"The allegation is that a game was being played to investigate the blood alcohol level of patients in the emergency rooms, in particular with Indigenous people and perhaps others. And if true, it is intolerable and racist and of course (has) affected profoundly patient care," Dix told reporters at a news conference in Vancouver on Friday morning.

Former Representative for Children and Youth Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond to lead the investigation that will start Monday, he said.

[So far "allegations" ... but with Health Minister speaking publicly on it, it's likely for real]

Emergency rooms are not an appropriate place for controversial humour and childish games.

If you mean of the betting itself, not in the public domain

If you mean info on it, there is a video in the link

Without video evidence, how can they confirm this?

Witnesses .. apparently there are several

This just came to light and details so far are scant - "game betting on the blood alcohol level of mainly Indigenous patients"

Next week is investigation - I assume after that details will flow

It is unusual in today's world there are not videos taken by witnesses sprayed all over the place

Dix has proven to be a very reliable and cool handling Health Minister

[It's looking more "for real" as it evolves]

The president of Métis Nation BC is recommending the province create a tip line for anyone who's seen or experienced racism in the health-care system.

Clara Morin Dal Col says ever since Health Minister Adrian Dix announced allegations of racism in the health-care system, Métis Nation BC has been flooded with calls "from health-care staff who have witnessed this and had stories to tell, but were afraid to lose their jobs."

Métis Nation CEO Daniel Fontaine said he notified the province when he heard about the allegations around the so-called "Price is Right" game.

He said he is also aware of reports from 2019 that "catalog literally dozens of incidents, almost as egregious as what we've heard with this Price is Right game."

"There are documented cases with the government's own health workers who are indicating that this is systemic and it will require some significant changes and it may even require some people being removed from the health-care system if, in fact, it can be proven that they were participating in racist activities," he said.

This is what I would expect from undergrad university kids, not medical professionals.

Odinson

The medical professionals are often the types who want to be nurses because it is an easy indoor job..

And to some, its a calling.. They are good.

Hence there is a lot of abuse..

Again, its an issue of giving too much power to a worm.

Gawd knows, I am not easily offended. However, doctors and nurses should not be playing adolescent games with patients.

Odinson

We got active serial-killers in our hospitals..

The cops are investigating patient deaths as murders now.
