POLITICS 2020 ELECTION

The Secret History of the Shadow Campaign That Saved the 2020 Election

Illustration by Ryan Olbrysh for TIME

BY MOLLY BALL

FEBRUARY 4, 2021 5:40 AM EST

A weird thing happened right after the Nov. 3 election: nothing.

The nation was braced for chaos. Liberal groups had vowed to take to the streets, planning hundreds of protests across the country. Right-wing militias were girding for battle. In a poll before Election Day, 75% of Americans voiced concern about violence.

Instead, an eerie quiet descended. As President Trump refused to concede, the response was not mass action but crickets. When media organizations called the race for Joe Biden on Nov. 7, jubilation broke out instead, as people thronged cities across the U.S. to celebrate the democratic process that resulted in Trump's ouster.

A second odd thing happened amid Trump's attempts to reverse the result: corporate America turned on him. Hundreds of major business leaders, many of whom had backed Trump's candidacy and supported his policies, called on him to concede. To the President, something felt amiss. "It was all very, very strange," Trump said on Dec. 2. "Within days after the election, we witnessed an orchestrated effort to anoint the winner, even while many key states were still being counted."

In a way, Trump was right.

There was a conspiracy unfolding behind the scenes, one that both curtailed the protests and coordinated the resistance from CEOs. Both surprises were the result of an informal alliance between left-wing activists and business titans. The pact was formalized in a terse, little-noticed joint statement of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and AFL-CIO published on Election Day. Both sides would come to see it as a sort of implicit bargain–inspired by the summer's massive, sometimes destructive racial-justice protests–in which the forces of labor came together with the forces of capital to keep the peace and oppose Trump's assault on democracy.

The handshake between business and labor was just one component of a vast, cross-partisan campaign to protect the election–an extraordinary shadow effort dedicated not to winning the vote but to ensuring it would be free and fair, credible and uncorrupted. For more than a year, a loosely organized coalition of operatives scrambled to shore up America's institutions as they came under simultaneous attack from a remorseless pandemic and an autocratically inclined President. Though much of this activity took place on the left, it was separate from the Biden campaign and crossed ideological lines, with crucial contributions by nonpartisan and conservative actors. The scenario the shadow campaigners were desperate to stop was not a Trump victory. It was an election so calamitous that no result could be discerned at all, a failure of the central act of democratic self-governance that has been a hallmark of America since its founding.

Their work touched every aspect of the election. They got states to change voting systems and laws and helped secure hundreds of millions in public and private funding. They fended off voter-suppression lawsuits, recruited armies of poll workers and got millions of people to vote by mail for the first time. They successfully pressured social media companies to take a harder line against disinformation and used data-driven strategies to fight viral smears. They executed national public-awareness campaigns that helped Americans understand how the vote count would unfold over days or weeks, preventing Trump's conspiracy theories and false claims of victory from getting more traction. After Election Day, they monitored every pressure point to ensure that Trump could not overturn the result. "The untold story of the election is the thousands of people of both parties who accomplished the triumph of American democracy at its very foundation," says Norm Eisen, a prominent lawyer and former Obama Administration official who recruited Republicans and Democrats to the board of the Voter Protection Program.

All the while people have been deplatformed, banned, throttle, and in some cases doxxed for saying these same things...

Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors...even by children.

Because history is edited, most people today don't realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views.

Lawsuits are a powerful weapon in the cancel culture arsenal.

Fox News cancels Lou Dobbs Tonight

Dobbs was one of the networks' most pro-Trump hosts

Some speculated that the move might have been related to a $2.7 billion defamation lawsuit filed by voting machine company Smartmatic on Thursday. The filing specifically mentioned Dobbs' comments related to claims that the company helped rig the election against Trump.

It's not any different. It's simply another example of the very same thing that is going on today & headed for big trouble ahead

Due process goes out the window when it comes to cancel culture. By the time all the facts come to light, it is too late. The damage has been done and the mob is onto its next victim.

This crap is insane! Now you know why I was so angry/sad when the Confederate monuments started coming down. In Richmond, the colossal Robert E. Lee is all that remains, standing high above the filth. They will have to cut him into 3 pieces just to move him.

Then there was the KungFlu in place, and no one is protesting this stuff. Then the mob of degenerates attacks those that do. I feel alone in this struggle. I wish I could pull thousands of us together, and squash this shit. I dont condone violence, but it seems the violent voices are the only ones heard.... if it fits the agenda, otherwise you're a white supremacist domestic terrorist nazi.

Hateful LA Times Reporter Virginia Heffernan Compares Kindly Pro-Trump Neighbors to Terrorists After They Helped Plow Her Driveway for Free

https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/wp-content/uploads/virginia-heffernan-snowplow.jpg">

This is the face of a modern-day leftist.

Hateful, humorless and intolerant.

Los Angeles Times columnist wrote a screed this week for the paper trashing her pro-Trump neighbors after they helped plow her driveway following a snow storm.

Quote from: "In LA Times"Oh, heck no. The Trumpites next door to our pandemic getaway, who seem as devoted to the ex-president as you can get without being Q fans, just plowed our driveway without being asked and did a great job.

How am I going to resist demands for unity in the face of this act of aggressive niceness?

Of course, on some level, I realize I owe them thanks — and, man, it really looks like the guy back-dragged the driveway like a pro — but how much thanks?

These neighbors are staunch partisans of blue lives, and there aren't a lot of anything other than white lives in neighborhood.

This is also kind of weird. Back in the city, people don't sweep other people's walkways for nothing.

REGINA -- Ward 6 councillor Daniel LeBlanc said he has been fired from law firm Gerrand Rath Johnson (GRJ) LLP, according to a post on his Facebook page.

LeBlanc recently came under fire after putting forth a motion at an executive committee meeting that if approved, would ban oil industry sponsorships from city-owned facilities.

Council withdrew the motion following a strong public reaction to the issue.

Leblanc said a tweet from Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe "unnecessarily escalated" the situation.

In a real world, yes. In today's world, sadly  it's for real, typical and in character with all of her her works

Current situation is not pretty. There is no longer one country. There are now 2 distinct and ideologically separate sides

Twitter has permanently suspended The Gateway Pundit's account over what it says are "repeated violations" of the platform's rules.

The social media giant said the account, run by conservative Jim Hoft, was suspended for repeated violations of its "civic integrity policy," according to a statement viewed by media outlets.
