We just had municipal elections in Alberta.....fewer than fifty per cent of eligible voters cast a vote.

She is not a friend of the oil and gas industry.

She wants to be mayor so she can make life miserable for the thousands of Calgarians that rely on the oil and gas industry to feed their families.

Switzerland is an example of a higher level of direct voter democracy. Probably the only one. But it has a downside; "Direct democracy has a curious effect on voter turnout – it seems the more of a voice people have, the less often they turn out to vote."

Meaning fewer people can control government decisions that effect all.

Does Switzerland have low voter turnout for referenda? This is the first I heard that.

Congrtulations Alberta for the strong message you sent to Ottawa.

Not sure about turnout, but Switzerland allows public to vote on many if not all items

Far as I know they are unique on this

Searched: Swiss referendums take three forms: popular initiatives, which are citizen proposals to create a new law and require 100,000 valid signatures on a petition to get on the ballot; facultative or optional referendums, which are citizen proposals to approve or reject a piece of existing law and require 50,000 valid signatures on a petition to get on the ballot; and mandatory referendums, which are required to revise the constitution, join an international organisation or introduce emergency federal legislation for over a year

I like that about Switzerland..

Taiwan has had referendums too..

Canada seems to have an aversion to direct democracy.
