We just had municipal elections in Alberta.....fewer than fifty per cent of eligible voters cast a vote.

Switzerland is an example of a higher level of direct voter democracy. Probably the only one. But it has a downside; "Direct democracy has a curious effect on voter turnout – it seems the more of a voice people have, the less often they turn out to vote."



Meaning fewer people can control government decisions that effect all.

Does Switzerland have low voter turnout for referenda? This is the first I heard that.

Not sure about turnout, but Switzerland allows public to vote on many if not all items

I like that about Switzerland..



Taiwan has had referendums too..



Canada seems to have an aversion to direct democracy.
