it goes without saying, not all covers are successful; not all are good. In fact, some can be downright awful.  But, I digress.  Van Halen's 1978 cover of the Kinks Classic "You Really Got Me" was good and successful:

The Kinks were formed in 1963 and had a huge hit with the original.  Compare:

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for 60s garage bands. The Gants was one such band. These boys were from Mississippi.  Originally formed in 1963 as The Kingsmen, they yielded to the Seattle Kingsmen of "Louie Louie" fame. As to the origin of The Gant name, it was a popular kind of shirt back then with a button down collar.

They had a top 40 hit in 1965 with this cover of a Bo Diddley number:
